Obituary of VICTOR (VIC) JOSEPH RIEGER

VICTOR (VIC) JOSEPH RIEGER MARCH 1, 1926 – MARCH 16, 2017 Our beloved husband, dad, grandpa, papa, and uncle to many, peacefully passed with family at his side. Left to mourn, his wife Mary (nee Zarazun), daughters Jane (Earl), and Debbie, grandchildren Kelley (Bob), Bobbie, Lindsay (Mike), Jaime, Suzanne (Brad), Lindsay (Vanessa), Robynne (Jordan), great grandchildren Tayler, Jordyn, Tarrin, McKenna, Jonas, Phoenix, Malakai, Cayden, Rowyn, Josh, Maddy, Dayton, Kohen, Walker, in-laws Josie, Stan (Joyce), Adam (Bev). Vic was born in Winnipeg, the son of John and Mary Rieger, and had six siblings. Vic was a veteran of World War II, with service in the Royal Canadian Navy. July 1948 he married the love of his life, Mary of 68 years. He first worked in the fur trade, later joining the Winnipeg Police Force and served as an officer until retirement. Vic and Mary spent their early retirement in British Columbia and later returned home to Winnipeg. Vic was loved and respected by his family and friends and known as the Gentle Giant. With his authoritative stature and heart of gold he led his family with unconditional love, honesty and strength. He taught us all the meaning of family, accountability, and the love of laughter. He was an inspiration to us facing life’s challenges, with courage, resilience, and a positive outlook, and always lending a helping hand. His whit and teasing of everyone will never be forgotten. “We will all miss you! Thanks for being you!” Special thanks to the staff of N1 North, Concordia Hospital for their positive interaction, care and compassion. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 22nd at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, followed by Interment at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. Donations in lieu of flowers to Heart and Stroke and Alzheimer Society.
