JOSEPH PAUL MALCOLM
It is with heartfelt sadness that the Malcolm family announce the sudden passing of our loving Husband, Father and Grandfather, Joseph “Joe” Paul Malcolm at the age of 69 years on Sunday, June 4, 2017.
Joe was predeceased by his loving parents, Madeline and Charles Malcolm of Ebb and Flow FN and his in-laws Sarah and Joseph Beaulieu of Sandy Bay FN. His brother Geordie and Leona Malcolm, His sister Mary and James Houle, His special brother David McKay, Brothers in Law, Angus Starr and Charlie Whitford and many others.
Joe leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Lydia Malcolm; his children, Renee, Joe Jr.(Sherri), Harvey (Elana) and Wendy (Mike). He will be sadly missed by his 10 Grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Lance, Justin, Walter, Wendel, Maddie, Michael John, Ethan, Brett, Emily and Avery.
Joe began his work career as a young man, he was a Supervisor of the boys at the Sandy Bay Residential School, Dauphin Residential School and at Whitehorse, Yukon. He then worked at the Portage Residential School until 1976 when he started working for Indian Affairs in Winnipeg. He started working with Southeast Resource Developmental Council (SERDC) from July 1979 to July 1985, he was employed in various positions at SERDC: Tribal Government Advisor, Band Financial Advisor, Director of Student Services. From July 1985 to June 2008, he was employed as the Tribal Director. After his retirement, from June 2008 to present day, he came back to assist on the winter road operations for Nor-Win Construction Company as a Safety Officer. Dad always worked hard, every day, he was always on the go. He sat on many boards and helped in spear heading many developments with the Aboriginal Community.
There are not enough words that can describe the kind of man Joe was. He had a heart of gold, always there to help anyone. He especially loved little children and paid special attention to all his loved ones.
Joe had so many interests; there were not enough hours in the day for him to do everything he liked. Sports, especially hockey which he played for many years and often received the “Most Gentlemanly Player Award”. He travelled extensively playing hockey in North America and Europe. He enjoyed taking and watching his sons and grandsons to many, many games and tournaments.
Joe was actively involved in the classic car show in Manitoba and attended many cars shows. He attended his last car show on Sunday evening at Pony Corral on Grant Ave.
Dad had a love for music that he passed on to his children; classic country was always playing on our many travels. He loved to travel far and near, always on the go. He always had a smile for everyone he met and kind words to share. Education was important to him and he encouraged us to work hard. He was the hardest working person we knew.
He was also very involved with Kateri Tekakawitha Aboriginal Catholic Community. Dad had strong faith in the Creator and instilled that faith in us.
He was also instrumental in the initial design of the Sandy Bay Featherman logo and the Original Team. He was also involved in starting the first Aboriginal Junior “A” hockey team in Canada, the Southeast Thunderbirds. Dad always encouraged our youth to be involved in sports. Dad played many years of hockey with many hockey teams. Sagkeeng Oldtimers, Southeast Golden Bows, Winnipeg Tobans, Sandy Bay Feathermen.
Dad’s favourite time of the year was attending the Red River Ex, he could be found there enjoying the sights and sounds of the fair. He always enjoyed attending the Morris Stampede. Think of him when you attend this year.
There are far too many to Thank individually but, with deepest gratitude we thank you all. Our lives will never be the same but, we take comfort in the many, many memories that we have.
