ELSIE GILLESPIE
(nee Gayoway)
November 4, 1922 – November 26, 2017
Peacefully, on Sunday, November 26, 2017, Elsie Gillespie passed away at Golden Door Geriatric Centre at the age of 95 years.
Survived by her husband Allen of over sixty years; sons; Dr. Brian Gillespie, Donald Gillespie (Dr. Jamie); and grandchildren, Emily and Colleen. Also left to cherish her memory are niece and nephew Nancy McDugal (Sergé) of Montreal and Garry Gayoway of Winnipeg as well as other nieces and nephews. Elsie was predeceased by her parents Michael and Louise; brother Pte Micheal Gayoway PPCL1, killed in action in Ortona, Italy and brother and sister-in-law Allen and Doris Gayoway.
Elsie was born in Winnipeg and grew up on Redwood, Mountain and College Avenue. She received her education at Margaret Scott and King Edward schools and Isaac Newton High School. Her two main places of employment were Feldsted Jewellers and North American Educational Guild. She married Allen Gillespie on May 25, 1957 and resided at 341 Smithfield Avenue for 53 years at which time they moved to Seine River Retirement Residence. Her greatest love was her family and enjoying her precious grandchildren. Elsie also enjoyed volunteering, painting and travelling.
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue with Fr. John Sianchuk officiating. A private family interment will take place on Monday.
