Obituary of MARGARET JOYCE PERKINS
MARGARET JOYCE PERKINS
Passed away peacefully on November 28, 2017 at the Concordia Hospital.
Margaret was born on September 24, 1943 in Winnipeg and was a proud lifelong resident of the North End. After graduating from Sisler High School she attended the University of Manitoba Faculty of Home Economics and received the Faculty Gold Medal on graduation. Following her dietetic internship in Minneapolis, Margaret worked at the Winnipeg General Hospital (now Health Sciences Centre) as a therapeutic dietitian on the medical wards until her retirement in 2001. Well respected by her students and peers, Margaret received several awards for excellence in teaching.
An avid traveller from childhood (Dad was a CPR employee when families had passes!), Margaret roamed from the Far East to Europe, the Middle East to the Caribbean, Australia to Alaska.
Over the years Margaret shared her home with many “K-9” companions. This led to her involvement with the Bichon Frise community where she made many friends.
Margaret was also an avid gardener and shared the fruits of her labour with friends and neighbours. A gift of her salsa and chili sauce was much prized.
Margaret always looked forward to Christmas holidays in Pennsylvania with friend Jeannie and adopted nieces and nephew - Meg, Mac and Bonnie. They all enjoyed visits in Winnipeg and in later years, travelling together.
Predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mary (Manko); and her brother Charlie, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Arlene; nieces and nephew, Meg (Dan), Mac (Brea) and Bonnie (Gabor) and numerous cousins.
Margaret’s family and friends would like to thank Dr. Patricia Harris and Wendy and the staff of Concordia Hospital and CancerCare Manitoba for their care and concern throughout her illness.
If desired, donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or The Winnipeg Humane Society.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Cropo Funeral Home, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB.
