MONA LEE CHAVES

June 9, 1956-August 4, 2018
On August 4, 2018, with her girls, sister and best friend by her side, Mona, passed away peacefully, after a long, heroic battle with cancer.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Dia and Jena (Chris); her granddaughter and light of her life, Eliana. She also leaves to mourn her siblings, Donna and Dennis (Sue). Her in-laws Jose and Filomena, brothers-in-law Jose, Arsenio (Maria), Ernesto (Lori), and sisters-in-law Ermelinda (Silvino) and Ana Maria; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and one great great nephew.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jorge, whom she is happily reunited with; parents Mona and Gordon, brother-in-laws Dennis and Dinis.
Mona was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Winnipeg when she was 2 years old. She was the youngest and “brattiest” sibling. Mona grew up in Westwood, where she went to school and made many life long friends, including the Jaskens. She worked for over 30 years for Freed and Freed Int., the Freed’s became like Mona's second family, and they have helped immensely through these past two difficult years, we are forever grateful.
Mona was able to travel the world with work, some of her favourite places were Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. She, also, did a lot of travelling with her husband, friends and children over the years to memorable places, including Portugal, Mexico, Minneapolis, Hawaii, and Spain. Mona and Jorge spent lots of time with their girls at Spruce Sands for the summers and camping in different spots all over Manitoba.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the amazing medical professionals involved in Mona's care the last two years. Especially, Dr. Maksymiuk, Dr. Ahmed, Dr. West, and the amazing palliative care team at St. Boniface hospital.
Prayers will be said on Sunday, August 12, at 6:00pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 13 at 11:00 a.m. also at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mona's memory may be made to St. Boniface Hospital's Palliative Care Foundation.
