Obituary of JOSEPH BALDES
JOSEPH BALDES
On October 21, 2018, Joseph Baldes, after enduring a 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s, passed away peacefully.
He is lovingly remembered and survived by his Wife (of 64 years), Aloisia, oldest Son Helmut and Wife Kelly, Grandchildren Matthew, Nicole, Korie & Courtney. Second Son Hubert, Grandchildren Tammy, Carmen, Anthony. Daughter Ingrid (Grywacheski) and Husband Stanley Grandchildren Amanda and Stephen. Third Son Joe and Wife Patty and Grandson Joseph Stuart. He also has 6 Great Grandchildren.
Predeceased by his parents Josef & Maria Baldes and his brother Mike Baldes (Always remembered as a great Baker).
He was born in what was known as Yugoslavia (now Serbia) on September 27, 1931. In 1943 at the age of 12 his family was forced out of Yugoslavia and settled in Austria. Due to the war and financial circumstances he could only obtain a grade 4 education and went straight into an apprenticeship. He managed incredibly well despite his handicap. At age 13 he began his career as a Butcher, one of only 2 options in that time. In 1952 he met his wife of 64 years and she graciously consented to marriage on February 27, 1954. He hand built his house in Austria (which is still standing) and finished just before his wedding.
In April 1957 Mom (pregnant) and Dad came to Canada with two kids in tow. Why he didn’t fly over Manitoba (in winter) and continue on to British Columbia is a family mystery but all is forgiven as he created a wonderful and productive life here in Manitoba for all his family.
The early days were all about camping, fishing, swimming, and skiing, from a rubber raft to ski boats, from an old circus tent to a cottage. Of course there was a lot of work involved as Dad just had to build everything himself. Every one of us kids are builders or producers of something or another thanks to Dad. He never failed to help out a friend in need and he was never afraid of hard work.
He lived in several homes in Winnipeg, one of which he built (imagine that) and most of which he renovated.
He retired in 1997 and spent a fair amount of time as a snow bird in Florida and travelled a fair bit. Prior to 2010 the family started to notice early signs of Alzheimer’s. In 2015, due to ill health he was moved to a care center and in 2017 he was moved to Tache Center which was his last home. Self-determination, fierce independence and a wonderful sense of humour were the hallmarks of his soul and the man that stayed to the bitter end. Alzheimer’s is a harsh mistress.
Dad’s spirit lives in us all and we will never forget his deeds, words, strength or his Love. We will miss you Dad.
A simple service will be held, as per his wishes, on Monday, November 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main Street.
