My heartfelt condolences go out to Mrs. Babinsky and family. For over forty years I have lived in the same home area, what is now in Winnipeg School Division Ward 9. I first met Mike when he was first running for school trustee. He was running for school trustee for in my home area. In dealing with him as my school trustee he was very helpful in helping me deal with various specific concerns and issues. Then things got shuffled and Mike became school trustee for a different ward that didn’t include my home area. Even when no longer my school trustee he would stop to say hello should our paths cross when out and about. At one point not all too long after Mike was no longer my school trustee I found it necessary to take an unfortunate matter to before the Winnipeg School Division board, and even though Mike was no longer officially my school trustee, he welcomed me and took personal interest in the matter at hand. Dare I say as a school trustee member of the school board he was more concerned and supportive than my official school trustee member of the board at the time? But that was Mike. He was no-nonsense, and common sense practical, consistently trying to do what he figured to be the right solution for whatever the issue at hand at the moment was. Occasionally his no-nonsense attitude to getting things done ruffled a feather or two, but you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet… ;-) No doubt these traits were the very essence of him in whatever endeavor he found himself pursuing. The world was enriched by his presence and could use many more people like he was. The world will now be poorer for his passing, but heaven will be richer. When my wife told me she had heard on the news that Mike had recently passed, I immediately said a little prayer for him. That’s about the best I could do for Mike at the moment. Please Mrs. Babinsky and family, allow me to offer the following simple poem as perhaps a bit of comfort at this trying time. I suspect Mike would concur.
⋯
—A Step on the Road to Home—
“When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little—but not too long,
And not with your heads bowed low,
Remember the love that we all shared,
Miss me—but let me go.
This is a journey that we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to the friends we know,
Bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me—but let me go.”

I first met Mike when I played Spongee in his Winnipeg sponge hockey league.
There were many of times we would talk after the rink lights had gone out about how he enjoyed giving back to the community.
I loved what he did for the sport of Spongee in Winnipeg.
Just think how many kids he kept off the streets in Winnipeg and gave them an outlet to shine!
Mike was always approachable no matter where he was.
Thank you Mike for being a great person to talk to and a great person with a heart for Winnipeg and the youth of our city.
I raise my hockey stick to you as the Rink Lights Shine Bright for you one last time!
You are one of Winnipeg's finests!
R.I.P.

Our deepest condolences to the Babinsky family. So shocked and so sad to hear this news. Michael and I went to Aberdeen together. He was a grade below me but he hung out with everyone. I remember him always joking around and making me laugh. He wrote in my autograph book back then “ 2, 4, 6, 8 next year I graduate!” He also presented me with my school bell for 25 years of service in teaching a few years ago. I’ll always remember him with a smile. Rest In Peace Michael. The Mandarano family

I didn't know Mr. Babinski personally but he spoke at my son's grade nine graduation this past June. I think I will always remember what he said about taking pictures. He said kids I know it's a pain and you're embarrassed to be asked to take the pictures with your family but trust me when I say this. One day you will look back and be glad you took that picture with your parents, grandparents and friends because it will be a memory of all the time you spent here. It will have captured a moment in your history here. So take the pictures and smile because this moment is one to be treasured. I'm so sorry that he had passed but if that one speech touched someone he didn't even know then I can only imagine how much he impacted the people closest to him. I'm so sorry for your loss.
