Tom was such an ally to me when I taught at St James. He was a good man who didn't let the pressures of his job rob a smile or a fun word from a student. He kept his sense of humour handy and used it when others might have given into anger. He appreciated the turn of a phrase, a deeper meaning, a broader thought. I admired him and treasure all the more the story we were able to work on and publish together. I'm so sorry for your loss and happy to have known Tom. Gregory

Dear Friends,
I was so saddened to read of the passing of Thomas Jon Turner. I had the unique honour of being his first girlfriend as we dated from 1986 until 1991. Tom was a wonderful man and I owe the direction of my past and present, in many respects, to his incredible mentorship and loving partnership during a time of great transitions in my life. I never would have gone to university had it not been for Tom encouraging me to buckle down in my final years of high school so that I wouldn't shut the door on the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. As it turned out, he and I attended uni together and I went on to obtain post-graduate degrees in the same discipline as he studied, sociology.
Tom literally saved my life when my appendix burst at his cottage at Malachi lake in 1989, driving like a mad-man across two lakes in a speed boat, then over Canadian Shield masquerading as a road for 100 miles into Kenora and he stayed by my side for the two surgeries and two months in hospital that it took to bring me back to life again.
Tom was a man of deep patience and profound kindness. His love of cats is legendary and his abilities to teach have doubtless left their indelible imprint on the many students who had the honour of being in his classes over these many long years. He taught me to believe in myself and to fight for the things that are important in this world. I have gone on to live a life filled with social activism and which I hope would make him proud of me.
Although we chose to go on with our lives in separate directions when we parted, and while I have not been able to stay in touch with Tom over these many long years, I nevertheless feel profound sadness and loss learning of his death today, on my birthday, and sadly some long weeks after the actual event. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues and hope you are able to seek solace and comfort with each other and the plethora of fine memories you all hold about a most wonderful man. For my part, I will honour his memory by trying to continue to live on a life-path that he so generously helped me to discover and will never forget him. He was my first real love, my life-saver and my mentor. He will be most sadly missed.
With deepest condolences,
Cheryl Lynn White. March 9th, 2019.
