Dad was born on September 4, 1922 in the district of Sandy Lake, MB. Dad's childhood and schooling was spent in that area. At age 15 after completing grade 8, he was ready for the workforce. His first job was working for a neighboring farmer for $5.00 a month. Over the years he worked at home and other jobs in the local area up until 1944 where he enrolled in the army and remained with the army until he was discharged in 1946.
The following year, he moved to Kelloe, MB and farmed with his parents in the summer months and lumberjacked in Ontario in the winter months.
On May 1, 1949 Dad and Mom married in Oakburn, MB. Together they raised their 6 children and farmed in the district of Shoal Lake for the next 32 years. Dad was considered a "jack-of-all trades". He was his own plumber, carpenter, mechanic, electrician, welder and seamstress. He also knew how to stretch a penny when he had to.
When the farm was sold, dad continued to work in Shoal Lake at a farm implement dealership and worked there until his retirement at age 70.
Years later, they moved to Winnipeg where dad always liked to keep himself busy. He would either help out with family tasks; volunteer with the Knights of Columbus; go to the Legion with mom to dance to the band's music; curl, fish, golf, play pool and construct buildings and aircrafts from toothpicks right up until the age of 90 when a stroke restricted his abilities.
His last 1 1/2 years were spent at the Holy Family Personal Care Home in Winnipeg where he passed on. Thank you to the staff for their care. A thank you also goes out to Susanne for her care.
A private funeral service was held.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
Condolences can be made online at www.cropo.com.
Don't think of him as gone away
his journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.
Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.
