Obituary of EWALD JOSEPH PAUL GERWING
EWALD JOSEPH PAUL GERWING
June 5, 1950- September 28, 2012
It is with deep sadness that the family of Ewald Joseph Paul Gerwing announces his sudden passing on September 28, 2012 while on a business trip in Denver, Colorado.
He is survived by his wife Joan of 40 years, his son Jamie and his precious granddaughter, Lily Irene.
Also left to mourn are his brother Roman of Humboldt, Sask, and his sister Marina (Frank) Lawrence, his sister-in-law Barbara Davis (Gord) and brother-in-law, Robert Scott. He is survived by 16 nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Wally was predeceased by his parents Irene and Ewald, sister-in-law Viola Gerwing and sister Maxine who died in infancy, in-laws Irene and Lloyd Scott.
He was involved in many ventures during his lifetime from real estate, to restaurateur, owning comic book stores, and manufacturing concrete lawn ornaments. Through all this he maintained his involvement in his own company Gerwing Construction Company. He spent later years as part-owner of Albany Keystone.
Wally was a great lover of books, the more obscure, the better. He especially loved books on history and the mystics. His reading menu included the Bible, and the Koran, books on Tibetan philosophy and the religion of the Hopi Indians.
He loved music and had eclectic musical tastes ranging from the blues, rock, Gregorian Chant and the classics.
His interest in social justice became evident when he started the Alphonse Gerwing Foundation which supported his uncle’s charitable works in Brazil.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Cremation to follow.
Flowers gratefully declined, donations to the Alphonse Gerwing Foundation in Wally’s name would be welcomed.
