BERNICE CHOMYN

Obituary of BERNICE CHOMYN

BERNICE CHOMYN November 8, 1927 - October 4, 2012 Our beloved Mother, Bernice Chomyn, passed away peacefully at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at St. Joseph Residence in Winnipeg. Mom was truly loved by all that met her. She possessed a positive, gentle and inviting personality with a great sense of humor and sharp wit. She was a loving Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Bernice Porubanec was born in Winnipeg into a large Ukrainian family with 4 sisters and 5 brothers living her entire life in the North End. She grew up on Pritchard Avenue and attended Isaac Newton High School where she enjoyed playing sports and performing in school plays. In 1951 she married Michael Chomyn and had three children, Gary (Jane) of Vancouver, Robert of Calgary and Teresa (James) Kraemer of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers: John, Peter, Steve, Nick and Walter and her sisters: Rose Spring, Sophie Slym and Mary Dilay. Early in her working career, one of Bernice's more interesting jobs was on the assembly line at a powdered-egg factory during the Second World War. Later she moved on to the Accounting Department at the T. Eaton Company. In 1962 when husband Mike and his brother Bill started in the Dairy Queen business it marked the beginning of many years of running the household, raising 2 high-energy boys and her little princess. Mom was famous for her delicious Borscht, Friday Night Perogies, her "lazy" Cabbage Rolls and her Shortbread Cookies, Christmas Cakes and homemade pickles. Bernice enjoyed playing card games - mostly cribbage, and playing bingo with her friends. For years she was avid bowler on the Dairy Queen Bowling team. In her fifties an energetic Bernice earned her driver's license and loved her independence behind the wheel. As her family grew she and Mike enjoyed road trips together to visit their grandchildren and for many years enjoyed winters in Palm Springs. For the last 4 years of her life Alzheimer's took hold of our Mother and we watched her slip away. She is survived by her three children and six grandchildren: Allene Chomyn (Kitchener), Andrew Chomyn (Surrey), Stephanie and Kassandra Chomyn (Calgary) and Jacqueline Kraemer, (Australia) and Kyle Kraemer (Winnipeg). Bernice also leaves to mourn, her sister Stephie Stetz of Riverton, Manitoba, sisters-in-law Edna Chomyn, Luba (Wally) Zueff, niece Irene (Del Reid) and many more nieces and nephews. We invite you to join us at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Saturday, October 13. Rosary will take place at 9:45 a.m. followed by the service at 10:00 a.m. Thank you to the loving and helpful caregivers at St. Joseph Residence.
