The first week of school its a good time to remember the teachers that made a difference in our lives. Sister Mary Gerald, later known as Sister Aileen Gleason, who is shown here in photo from St. Michael's Academy 1962 year book while working with the yearbook committee, was a teacher who made such a difference in my life. I recently found out that she had died earlier this year and that she would be honoured posthumously with a Governor General's Award for her work with refugees.

Dear Sister Aileen,
You left us without allowing us the opportunity to say goodbye and it was by sheer accident that I just learned the news. When we "faced time" two weeks ago, I knew you were suffering, but I didn't expect you were going to leave that early without my family and I being able to shake your hands as we do always whenever we visited Winnipeg.
If there is a person who amply benefit from the largesse of your heart, it was I for the following two reasons:
- It was thanks to you that I went from refugee status to landed immigrant and a Canadian citizen.
- Also, it was thanks to you that I was able to encourage the spirit of venturing to some of my friends living in Cameroun who were able to join me in Canada and with whom we now formed a large family.
Sister Aileen, your disappearance leaves me with mixed feelings: sadness and joy.
Sadness because when you love, respect and admire a person, you find it difficult to see her take this path of non-return, which is death.
Nonetheless, I am also feel with joy, for in your case, you have nothing more to prove to our society therefore deserves to leave in peace because I know you have taken the lead to better welcome us again in the future when we join you.
To your family as well as the Congregation of the nuns of our Lady of missions (RNDM), I offer my sincere condolences.
In the meantime, rest in peace Sister Aileen.

I wish to share my condolences. I was able to stay with Sister Aileen while I performed at the Winnipeg Fringe. One night I cooked all the Sisters salmon and ended with strawberries dipped in chocolate. She said this was not eating but dining. During my stay there I was able to see first hand refugees she was helping. One family wished to share food with us. Aileen said she had just eaten but I must eat so as not to offend them. It was quite spicy I remember. I had my truck and she had me help move one family. We shared many great conversations and observations of life.
It was a wonderful week every year.
Your cousin..... Susan

Sr. Aileen was my oldest cousin, in a large extended Martin Family. She was always respected as a tireless educator and humanitarian. Her tireless efforts changed so many lives and was a living example of devout Christianity.
