Obituary of VICTORIA JANE DWERNCHUK
VICTORIA JANE DWERNCHUK
(NEE ROMANIUK)
Surrounded by love and her girls, mom passed peacefully on April 11, 2019 at Seven Oaks Hospital.
Vicki was born on November 24, 1929 to Stella and Michael Romaniuk. Over the years, the family grew to include a brother Ron and sister Angie. She was predeceased by her parents and brother.
This Elmwood girl met the love of her life, our dad John in her teens. Vicki was outgoing and vibrant while John was shy and quieter in those early years. They married October 20, 1950. They built their first home on Neil Ave. Over the years the family grew to include 2 daughters, Debra and Laurie.
Vicki and John bowled with the "Neilers" for several years. Next came the idea of ballroom dancing. Mom was always full of ideas or plans and dad (now a funnier outgoing guy thanks to mom) was always game. In 1967, 3 couples (Hickaways, Balls, Dwernchuks) started the E.K. Dance Club. The club grew and flourished- many great lifelong friendships were started from that dance group and continue 50 years later.
Vicki was always an avid traveller. Family vacations were spent at our trailer at West Hawk Lake, motoring as far as California, renting cabins with Krutish's, flying to southern climates in the winter and at Bigstone. After the girls were grown Vicki and John wintered down south, travelled to Europe, South America and took cruises. Mom had the travel bug.
Vicki was a stay at home mom until Laurie was settled into school. Always creative and having a great eye for detail Vicki decided to train as a floral designer. She loved it so much that she and Margie decided to purchase Hi-Way Florist. Vicki looked forward to the annual floral conventions and design shows. She retired from Hi-Way and being full of too much energy- she and John purchased St. Vital Florist. Several years later she really did retire so that she and dad could spent winters south.
It was during this time that John was given his cancer diagnosis. During those 15 years of appointments and treatments, John, Debra and Laurie saw the strength and love that was the soul of Vicki. When dad passed, mom was devastated. It took great courage for Vicki to return to her mall walking and ladies golf league.
Vicki was blessed to find a wonderful group of women at Kildonan Place Mall who walked, lunched, and loved to travel. Vicki and her travel partner Irene visited China, Panama Canal, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Hawaii. Vicki still had that travel bug in her 80's and remained young at heart.
For 51 years, Vicki lived on Roberta Ave. and her home was her castle. Mom and dad loved their home, and Rossmere Golf Course.
In fall and winter months mom would always find a room to redecorate. In spring mom would visit every store that sold flowers and buy flats of them. It must have been the florist in her.
In June 2018 Vicki moved to River Ridge 2. Always a hard worker, it took a while for her to slow down and just enjoy. Our "Mrs. Clean" was probably the only resident to move in with full cleaning supplies and equipment. Mom really enjoyed the bus trips, happy hours and of course the walking and exercising. After a lifetime of work she was finally the one being waited on.
Vicki is lovingly remembered and painfully missed by her daughters Debra and Laurie (Rick), 4 grandchildren Torrie (Richard), Jonathan, Robert and Derrick, 2 great-grandchildren Kami and Damien, her sister Angie (Cliff) and family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Vicki's memory to Alzheimer's Society.
