Obituary of CARMELIA MARIA DE MELO
CARMELIA DE MELO
Peacefully after brief bout with pancreatic cancer, Carmelia de Melo (nee da Costa) passed away at Concordia Hospital on September 12. She was predeceased by her father Manuel da Costa, her mother Maria da Carmo da Costa, and her brothers Maxmiano and Rogerio da Costa. She leaves behind her husband of 59 years Joao (John), son Roger and daughter-in-law Marlene, her grandson Michael, daughter Fatima, her sister Manuela, and many nieces and nephews.
This ordinary life began on Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal in 1935. She met her husband through friends and followed him to Canada with a nine-month old son in tow. She adapted to Winnipeg winters while hanging on to the core values of faith and family. Carmelia’s home always had food, love, and a pragmatic approach to life.
Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, September 18, 11 am, at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church at 315 Monroe Avenue, with Father Greg Mulligan, presiding, with visitation taking place one hour prior. Burial will take place at Assumption Cemetery at 3990 Portage Avenue afterwards. In lieu of flowers, we ask people donate to either the Concordia Hospital Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba, or Holy Names House of Peace on 211 Edmonton Street. The family would like to thank the staff of N1 North at Concordia Hospital for their kindnesses and hard work during mom’s final weeks. Thank you also to Palliative Manitoba and to Dr. Annabel Vattheuer for her years of caring for mom.
This is my commandment, that you will love one another as I have loved you. (John 15:12)
