Jarvis was born in Vita, Manitoba on October 25, 1936. He graduated from Shevchenko High School in 1954. He then decided to pursue a career in teaching. Jarvis graduated from Teacher’s College (Normal School) in 1955 and later earned his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba. Jarvis started his teaching career at the tender age of 18, in a one room rural school at Lydiatt, Manitoba. Two years later he joined the Transcona Springfield School Division, where he taught junior high math and science courses, for 35 years. During this period Jarvis was actively involved in revising the math curriculum for the Department of Education. In 1956, Jarvis met the love of his life, Elsie. Two years later on October 24, 1958 they were married. They enjoyed 61years together raising their family, spending time at the cabin, travelling Canada from coast to coast, frequenting Florida and Hawaii, and enjoying their time with all of their great friends. Jarvis was an avid curler, golfer, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed the comradery with his friends during these activities. For 22 years Jarvis loved being at the cabin at Dorothy Lake. The time spent at their cabin was shared with family and friends, where many fond memories were made. Jarvis was a dedicated grandfather and he never missed his grandchildren’s events, whether it be volleyball, basketball, football, rugby or dance and piano recitals. He loved his grandchildren dearly and was very proud of their successes and achievements. He always found the time for his grandchildren, no matter what the need may have been.
