Obituary of MARY VERA WACHAL
MARY VERA WACHAL (WASNEY)
On October 2, 2011, at Middlechurch Home, with family at her side, Mary, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, went home to be with her Lord at the age of 91 years.
She is survived by her 5 children; Audrey Chastko, Judy (George) Glowa, Jim (Joanne), Richard (Wanda), Randy (Nadine), 13 grandchildren and 17.5 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Tony of 39 years; son in-law Tony Chastko and granddaughter Ann-Marie Chastko; parents Bartholomew and Eva; brothers Albert, Mike, Stanley and Walter; sisters Victoria (Herda), Stelia (Swirsky), Joyce (Boss) and four brothers in infancy.
She is also survived by sister Emily (Rondeau) of Toronto, and brother John of Edmonton.
Mom grew up in Highland Glen, and moved to Winnipeg at 16 to live with many other rural girls with the Sisters of Service. Her strong lifelong faith and love of the Lord was born from her parents and nurtured here.
In 1940, at a dance in Narol she met her beloved husband Tony. They married in 1941 and together raised 5 children and 2 foster children in East St. Paul on the family market garden farm. Tony passed away suddenly in 1980 after only 39 years together. Her commitment to her marriage and love for her husband and family was evidenced by all who knew her.
Mom loved the land and was most content working in the fields, yard or flower beds. She loved being a homemaker and poured her life into those around her. With a generous spirit she shared her talents, cookies, quilts, pickles, paska, perogies and awesome cinnamon buns with all. Mom enjoyed travelling, painting, a good laugh, reading the Free Press and completing the Jumble and a game of cards with family and friends. Education and a strong work ethic were very important to her and she passed her values on to her children and grandchildren.
She was an active member of Corpus Christi Parish, the Catholic Woman's League and Rosary Society until her move to Middlechurch Home. As a founding member of the East St. Paul Seniors Club mom enjoyed many Tuesday and Friday afternoons of friendship there. During her stay at Middlechurch and Bethania Home (BTU) there were many wonderful people who lovingly took care of mom. Your genuine compassion and care is greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on October 6th at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 5819 Henderson Hwy, St. Clements with Fr. Jerry Talarski officiating. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba,120 Donald Street Wpg. MB. R3C4G2.
