Obituary of AGNES MADELEINE REID
July 24 1927-February 23, 2020
Agnes was born and raised in Starbuck, Manitoba. As one of twelve children, she was always surrounded by family. She married the love of her life, Grant Reid, had four children, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter. Her mother Octavie lived with Agnes until her passing, helping to care for the great brood. Three or four generations living together was the norm, not to mention all the visiting aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. Agnes’ greatest accomplishment was the loving laughter-filled home she created, where all were welcome. She continued to live at home with her family until just before her passing.
Agnes had a passion for words. She mentioned to Grant that she won the spelling bee in elementary school, and he used to tease her by telling ALL about his wife, the great speller, to which she would respond with some very colourful language!
She began working in Classified Ads of the Free Press in the mid 50’s, retiring some 30 years later as the Head Cashier in the Accounting Dept. Surrounded by print, she was an avid follower of current events and politics. In her later years she did her ‘homework’ every day, which included the crossword puzzle and cryptoquote. She was a voracious reader who traveled far and wide in the words of others, often saying, “I don’t know what I would do without my books.”
Agnes was predeceased by her husband Grant in 2000 and her daughter Darlene in 2007. She is survived by son Gary (Sharon) and daughters Donna (Roger) and Barbara, her three sisters Anne, Doreen and Marie, as well as her great extended family.
The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Darcy Johnson for taking good care of Agnes over the years, as well as the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital for the comfort they provided in her final days.
