WALTER MANULAK

Obituary of WALTER MANULAK

April 18, 1935 – April 3, 2020 Suddenly but peacefully, Walter Manulak passed on April 3rd at the age of 84. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Mary (nee Tokaruk), and by brothers Myron (Blanche), Leonard, and Eugene. He is survived by brother Ron (Annette), sister Darlene (Larry) Luhowy, sister Patricia (Brian) Dziver and sister-in-law Muriel. He leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years Evangeline (Slon), their children Eugene, Wesley (Tracy), Lisa (Trevor) and Daniel, grandchildren Crystal (Braden) Thordarson, Justine (Ian) and Reece, and great granddaughter Oaklee. Walter grew up on the farm where his grandparents homesteaded in 1899 at Seech, near Oakburn, MB. He attended St. John School from grades 1 to 8 and Oakburn School from grades 9 to 12. After completing his senior matriculation, he enrolled at Normal School and earned his teaching diploma at the age of 19. His teaching career took him to the rural schools of Braddock, St. John, Oakburn High School and Rossdale (Lockport). After moving to Winnipeg in 1961, he taught in Transcona and continued his education at University of Manitoba, earning his B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees. The last 24 years of his career were in the St. Vital School Division, retiring in 1989. The Orthodox faith and Ukrainian heritage and language were immensely important to Walter, and that was reflected through his endless hours of volunteer work for the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. He also served on the board of St Andrew’s College (U of M campus), was a member of the Order of St. Andrew at the local and national levels, and a serving member of the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada. He loved to organize fundraisers and enjoyed the comradery of working in a busy kitchen. Walter was a passionate gardener. He and Evangeline earned many ribbons at Transcona Garden Club show and they shared their harvest generously with friends, family and neighbors. When he wasn’t gardening, Walter could be found picking berries and mushrooms in the bush with his friends. He was a master of cribbage, puzzles and Jumble. Nothing was more joyous to Walter than family gatherings. Whether it was a family reunion, wedding, anniversary, or holiday celebration, the preparations had to be perfect, and the food plentiful. Those memories will be long lasting. A private funeral service and internment will take place. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. Please check Cropo website for updated information regarding memorial service details.
