Obituary of MARY M CARDINAL

Mary M Cardinal (nee Podworny) August 12, 1921 - May 5, 2020 Mary was the youngest of six children born to Stephen and Xenia Podworny in the district of Gilbert Plains, MB. Her siblings Matt, John, Harry, Mike and Anne all predeceased her. Mary grew up on the family homestead farm until the age of 16 when she moved to Dauphin in order to attend grade 11. After completing grade 12 through correspondence she moved to Winnipeg to attend Normal School. She returned to the country to teach in a two-room schoolhouse for a few years. Mary moved back to Winnipeg and while at a dance met her future husband Bill. They had three daughters, Valerie, Marilyn and Janet. Motherhood and family brought her the biggest pleasures in life. It also brought her the biggest heartaches when she lost nephews, nieces and her grandson, Ken. She was so very proud of all the accomplishments her family made be they small or large. Mom aka Grandma or Basement Grandma was always there with encouragement and pride. She was loving, intelligent, inquisitive, hard working, independent, gentle, kind, good natured and had a quick sense of humour that was appreciated by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mary was a great cook and loved experimenting with international flavours. She understood how good food brought family together around the table. She gardened, preserved her harvest, was a talented seamstress and loved to ride her blue bicycle to grocery shop and get around the neighbourhood. Crossword puzzles and keeping current with the news were part of her daily routine. Although home was her favourite place, she did enjoy trips to England, the Netherlands and many beautiful places right across Canada. Mary faced her health challenges with grace. She treated everyone with respect and had so much gratitude for the care she received at the Grace Hospice where many genuine and mutually warm bonds were formed. The staff and volunteers gave so much of themselves not only Mary but her whole family. Mary’s unconditional love of her family and the happiness she brought to all of their lives will be her legacy. She will forever be cherished and held hold close within their hearts. Mary had a long and well lived life. It now time for her to rest in peace. Due to the current situation, a celebration of Mary’s life will be held at a later date.
