Obituary of THOMAS WIEBE

THOMAS WIEBE Tom passed away peacefully at the Salvation Army Golden West Lodge on Monday July 6, 2020. He is survived by his wife Wilma and her children Allan and Andrea, Denise, Glen and Jodi, as well as Wilma’s Grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Rose Penner, his sister-in-law Hilda Zacharias, his son Kelvin and Dawn and their family: Cameron & Lorrie, Tommy, Robbie, Jamie & Jon Wiebe. Clayton & Shawna, Connor, Hudson & Mya Wiebe all of Langenburg, Sask. Carma & Richard, Brooklynn, Braeden & Acacia Bankert of Dauphin, Man. His daughter Karen Knight and her family: Jeremy, Jared, Zachary Knight and Tess Furtado of Winnipeg, Man. His son Daryl and Sharon and their family: Jon & Arlynn, Emsley & Everton Wiebe. Aaron & Michele Wiebe, and Cari & Keenan Bentham all of Winnipeg, Mb. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Tom was pre-deceased by his first wife Marie (1997), his parents Abram J (1973) and Helena (Sawatsky) (1984), his parents-in-law Franz (1986) and Elizabeth (Kroeker) (1989) Zacharias, three sisters in childhood, sister & brother-in-law Helen & Ernie Hiebert, sister & brother-in-law Henrietta & Abe Toews, brother & sister-in-law Ben & Eva Wiebe, brother-in-law Dan Penner. Also, in-laws David & Helen Zacharias, Edward & Betty (Zacharias) Jones, Frank Zacharias, Ike & Agatha (Zacharias) Boehlig, Allan & Susan (Zacharias) Gurney. He was also pre-deceased by Wilma’s mother Louise Green. Thomas Wiebe, husband, Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa was born February 12, 1927 in the Neuhoffnung district near Altona, Manitoba. He was the sixth of eight children. As was common at that time, Tom attended school until grade 8. Then he joined the work force at home on the farm and later at other jobs. He made a major life decision in March 1949, receiving Jesus as his Savior and following God for the rest of his days. He married Marie Zacharias on October 22, 1949 and settled in Winnipeg. In 1954, the young couple began attending Central Alliance Church and became lifetime members. This fellowship is known today as The Bridge Church. Tom and Marie were involved at various jobs in Winnipeg and in Toronto before settling back in Winnipeg. He was a truck driver for Eaton's, Roger's Fruit, Sampson's Auto Roll and Leamington Transport. Later he hauled mail for Neil Penner and Pete Wiebe. He spent many years as a dispatcher for Leamington Transport and Reimer Express Lines. Always a farmer at heart, he managed the Baleja Farm at Sanford for 2 seasons. Later became a hobby farmer at Sperling in the 1970's. Following this he enjoyed many holidays and retirement days helping on his son's farm in Saskatchewan. He was a self-educated handyman and mechanic, making many home and auto repairs over the years. He also learned to play the guitar while growing up and played the accordion in early adulthood. As his children, we believe we inherited our interest in music from him. Tom had a great sense of humor and fit well into extended family gatherings where everyone enjoyed laughing and telling stories. Some of his stories were: his first job pitching sheaves, going on a custom harvesting trip with his Dad and neighborhood friend Jake Blatz in 1947, or driving through a red light on June 8, 1952, taking Mom to the hospital to have their first baby and many trucking stories. On his 75th birthday, Tom was elated to receive news that his first great grandchild had arrived on the same day, a boy appropriately named Tommy. In December 2002 Tom married Wilma Doty. Together, they enjoyed family, attending church, going to special events and spending time at Winnipeg Beach. They also spent many hours volunteering at Golden West Lodge. He was so warmly welcomed into the Green family and he cared a lot for them too. Ken and Arla had a very special place in Tommy’s heart. He always looked forward to the day the family from Alberta and Ontario came to visit. If friends so desire, donations may be made to The Bridge Church or to Golden West Lodge. We have all been blessed to have this kind, caring and loving man in our lives for so long.
