Obituary of GILBERTO MONIZ GALVÃO

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our dear Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, after a short but courageous battle with lung cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife Ines, of nearly 55 years and daughters Cindy (Luis) and Tammy (Douglas), 7 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren. Gilberto was a kindhearted, selfless gentleman who wore his heart on his sleeve. He was born October 7, 1942 in a small village, Ponta Garça in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal. He shared the family home with his parents; Manuel and Maria Luiza and his siblings; Maria, Margarida, Armanda and Manuel. He was a great story teller and shared many memories of their life back home. He amazed everyone with the details and his impeccable memory. The family began their journey to a new life when immigrating to Thunder Bay, Ontario thanks to the support of Tio Virginio. With Gilberto’s effort he brought the family to Winnipeg and they purchased their first home. Throughout the years he spoke passionately and lovingly about Canada and what it meant to be a Canadian Citizen. He was proud of his Portuguese culture and it was evident with his food, taste of music, Portuguese TV, and most of all Soccer. Gilberto was a family man who was extremely hard working. He was a loyal employee for over 36 years at Federal Pioneer Electric later known as Pauwels. Anybody that knew him could attest to his strong work ethic. In his retirement, Gilberto was very active with yard work, snow removal, gardening and tinkering in his garage. He was very generous and would help friends, family and neighbors with their yard and especially the art of perfecting a vegetable garden. Later in his years he was very involved with family and enjoyed the simple things in life. He was considerate and very gracious and always willing to help others. We thank the staff at CancerCare for their care and support and especially the Palliative Care Team and nurses Tamara and Jen. The compassion, empathy and care you provided to our Dad, in his last few weeks of life, was beyond anything we could have ever prayed for. There will be a private family service due to COVID restrictions. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
