Obituary of GENNARO (JIMMY) ALTOMARE

GENNARO (JIMMY) ALTOMARE Peacefully on the morning of September 3, 2020 our Dad passed away at the age of 88. Jimmy will be remembered by his wife of almost 58 years, Maria, along with his children Nello (Barb), Teresa (Ken), & Vanda (Jason). His grandchildren Sarah (Karl), Thomas, Kira and Aidan and also his 3 great-grandchildren Caleb, Matteo and Sofia. He also leaves a large extended family here, in Canada, and in Italy. Dad came from a family of 9 children of which he was the last surviving member. Uncle Jimmy was proud of his Italian heritage was looked upon as the keeper of the family legacy. Dad was born on February 7, 1932 in Cellara, Cosenza, Italy. He often spoke fondly of his childhood years growing up during the Depression and WWII on the family farm, the Giardino. At the young age of 18, he decided to leave Italy and join his family in Transcona at the Central Hotel. In 1962, he married our Mum, Maria. They settled in Transcona to raise their family. Jimmy was employed with Canadian National Railway in Transcona where he was a section man and retired after 39 years of service. While at work, he was well known for his “shack” where he often held court with his colleagues. Jimmy loved gardening and growing his prized tomatoes. He and Maria had beautiful gardens that were often admired by their neighbours. Jimmy also loved getting together with family and friends to celebrate birthdays and holidays. While raising his family, during the summer, he would pack us up and we would go to the beach. He loved playing bingo and cards with his brothers and their families. As a family man, Dad was immensely proud and supportive of his children. He extended this same love and devotion to his daughter and sons’ in law. He absolutely cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren, reveling in their company. Much to the chagrin of his wife Maria…he loved playing his accordion whenever we were together, which was often! This past month saw our Dad face significant health challenges. We would like to acknowledge and thank the medical staff at St. Boniface & Seven Oaks hospitals and particularly the very caring staff at Riverview Health Centre. There will be a private family service to honour our Dad. If friends so desire, please consider making a donation to CancerCare Manitoba or Riverview Health Centre. Nothing beats the love of a caring Father & Nonno
