Obituary of SHEILA BESTH

SHEILA BESTH (nee RITCHIE) Surrounded by loving family, it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sheila, our dear Mother and Grandmother, at Concordia Hospital on November 22nd, 2012. Sheila lived with grace and dignity and carried a strong faith with her throughout her life. She was a loving, devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She worked tirelessly and generously to give back to her church and community through various acts of charity, too numerous to mention. Sheila was blessed with compassion and wisdom and was liked and respected by all who knew her. She had a keen intelligence with an analytical mind that gave her the uncanny ability to accomplish anything she set out to do. Born on July 4th, 1930 to Adam and Jessie Ritchie, Sheila grew up in Norwood and attended St. Joseph’s Academy. At the age of 14 she lost her only sibling in a tragic accident. Her brother Edwin was her best friend and confidante and his loss was a sorrow she carried with her always. Sheila married Vince Besth in 1952, and after an initial start in St. James, they settled in East Kildonan, raising their girls and involving themselves in parish life of St. Alphonsus Church. She returned to the work force once the girls were in school to supplement the family finances. This allowed her to plan annual fun filled camping and road trips with her usual flair for detail, always ensuring the family had good times that have left treasured memories. In addition, Sheila travelled widely, heading with Vince to such places as Panama, Great Britain, Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean and later, after his passing, to Europe, China, Israel and other exciting ports of call. She was also fond of shorter trips, heading often with her best friend Pauline to Grand Forks, Fargo, and beyond for shopping expeditions where bargains were zealously hunted with much fun and laughter. Sheila was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease and over time became increasingly dependent on the assistance of others. At the time of her passing her home was at Middlechurch Nursing Home where she was compassionately cared for with love, patience and good humour by extraordinary staff. The last week of her life was spent at Concordia Hospital where they too went above and beyond to ensure she passed with kindness and dignity. Left to cherish her memory, Sheila is survived by her daughters Maureen (Tim) Silk and Elaine (Brady) Martin, as well as grandchildren, Gary, Glen and Rob Silk, Devon and Alanna Martin. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba or a charity of one’s choice. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Interment at St. Vital Cemetery.
