Obituary of JANET DOREEN McCORMICK

JANET DOREEN McCORMICK (nee Richmond) September 14, 1920 - October 10, 2020 Doreen passed away peacefully on October 10th at the Tuxedo Villa where she enjoyed her 100th birthday celebration the previous month. Thank you to the staff of Riverwood Square (previous residence) and Tuxedo Villa for all the care and kindness they gave our Aunt. She is the last of her era in our family and will be missed. Doreen was predeceased by her mother Mabel Richmond (nee Bannerman), her husband Frederick James McCormick, her brother James Murray Richmond, and his wife Ellie (nee Ward). She is survived by nephews Ed Richmond of West Vancouver, Tom Richmond (wife Gerda) of Thailand, her niece Janet Wilson (husband John) of Vernon, BC; also by 2 great nephews and 3 great nieces, 5 great-great nephews and 1 great-great niece. Doreen was born in Vancouver, came to Winnipeg at an early age and was educated at Gladstone, Earl Grey and Kelvin schools. After graduating from Kelvin as Valedictorian for highest scholastic standing, she obtained a B.A. from United College (University of Winnipeg) where she was elected Lady Stick in her final year. During University summer break and for 7 years following graduation, she was employed by Great-West Life Assurance Co. in Winnipeg in Actuarial, Group Insurance, and Personnel departments. After 1 year with the Ford Motor Co., she joined Revenue Canada - Taxation, retiring in 1979 as Head of Human Resources and Planning, Prairies Division. Doreen was a member of the Niakwa Golf & Country Club (1952-1988) serving as Sports Captain, Alloys. She was a member of the University Women’s Club from 1975 to the present time, acting as Treasurer of the Scholarship Committee (10 years), editor of the club’s monthly newsletter, Convenor of Marathon Bridge and “Folklorama at Noon”, and part of the membership committee for many years. As a volunteer Doreen worked with the Manitoba Lung Association, UNICEF, IODE, Children’s Hospital Book Mart, and served on the University of Winnipeg Board of Regents (1980-1983) and volunteered 13 years with Alumni Affairs. She was a member of Regents Park United Church and, since 1990, of Crescent-Fort Rouge United Church, which she had attended as a young girl. Doreen was also a proud member of The Lord Selkirk Association of Rupert’s Land, being a direct descendant of Barbara & William Bannerman, Selkirk Settlers, who arrived at Churchill, Manitoba, in 1815 from Helmsdale, Scotland. In keeping with Doreen’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Interment will be made in the Bannerman family plot at Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie, Man. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
