Obituary of MARILYN FLORENCE RIMMER
MARILYN RIMMER (NEE) PEABODY
April 20, 1942 – October 27, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother Marilyn Rimmer, after a short but courageous bout with cancer at the age of 78.
Marilyn was the fourth child of Charlie and Della Peabody. Besides her parents she was also predeceased by her two sisters and brothers-in-law Joyce and Ted Sinnott and Barbara and Don Glover, as well as a special cousin Lorraine Sutherland.
Left to cherish her memory are her Husband Norm, of 58 years, her children, Brad (Ursula), Bruce (Char), Kristine (Lorne) Harbottle and Jay (Jodi). She will be missed by her grandchildren Christopher (BJ), Jamie, Eric (Kailey), Deanna (Justin), Ty and Baylee Harbottle. She also leaves behind two amazing Great-Grandchildren Trista and Jensen. She was so proud of each and every one of them.
She is also survived by her brother Doug (Marj) Peabody of Stoney Plain, Alberta and numerous nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
Marilyn was born and raised in Winnipeg. At an early age, she became involved with the Manitoba Highland Dancer’s Association, first as a dancer, teacher and later was a member of the executive for many years. She was rewarded for her commitment to this organization by receiving an Honorary Life Membership in 1991.
Marilyn learned to play the bagpipes (like her Mother) and joined the Winnipeg Heather Belles Ladies Pipe Band in 1960. She played with the band for a number of years.
Marilyn met Norm, the love of her life, in 1960 when she went to work for Trans-Canada Airlines in the Treasury Department. They were married on April 28, 1962. They love to travel. Their favourite spot was the Dominican Republic. They also travelled to Mexico, Phoenix, Alaska and the Atlantic provinces of Canada. For their 50 anniversary they took their dream trip to England and Scotland, including a quick trip to France. In April of last year they travelled to Hawaii.
After being an at home Mum for 16 years, Marilyn was hired by the Transcona Springfield School Division as School Secretary at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate. She truly loved her job there.
When Norm retired in 1966 from the Winnipeg Police Service, they moved to Lee River and became very involved with the Lac du Bonnet Community. Marilyn served many years as Secretary of the R.C.L. Lac du Bonnet Branch. She was awarded a Life Membership for her dedicated work to the Legion. They made many wonderful friends in Lac du Bonnet and missed them terribly when they moved back to Winnipeg. They made new wonderful friends when they moved in the Kildonan Green Apartments in 2012. Her new Red hat friends were also important to her.
Marilyn was above all a loving wife and mother. She loved nothing more than being in the audience cheering on her kids and eventually Grandkids in their various activities such as hockey, ringette, baseball, football, tae kwon do, dance recitals, lacrosse, pipe band competitions and highland dancing competitions. Her family was the biggest love of her life.
The family thanks CancerCare Manitoba and especially our family physician Dr. Denis Caners for his wonderful care. Also thanks to all the doctors, nurses, health care aides and staff in North 1N of Concordia Hospital for wonderful care and compassion they gave to Marilyn.
In lieu of flowers please send a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or Khartum Shriners’ Transportation Fund for Children at 1155 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3P 1B9.
