Remembering Helen Lorimer Messages from her Friends at Selkirk College
I just want to add that the notice in the paper of Helen's passing contained a link to viewing her online service. If this is still open and for those who may be interested, it was a most beautiful tribute to Helen's life. Her daughter and a granddaughter spoke so eloquently and the love and heartfelt emotion was palpable. The officiant also gave fitting tributes. I didn't know Helen well, but the service brought her closer to heart and it is worthwhile taking the time to reflect on the spirit of her life well-lived.
Linda Areshenkoff
I did know Helen well. She was a quiet treasure to her students and co-workers, and a mentor to me. Selkirk College has had some of the best the world has to offer. Linda Wilkinson
Ditto to all that John and Shoko have said. Helen was also tremendously valued in the Castlegar community. Her husband, who passed away around 2000, was the regional pathologist. Helen and her developmentally challenged daughter Johanna were well loved members first of the Presbyterian Church and later the United Church. Helen played a very active part in the Society for Community Living in Castlegar. She moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family when Parkinson’s Disease made life too difficult for her here. She was a wonderful person. The celebration of her life was a very moving and celebratory service. Elizabeth and Terry Fleet
In the early days of our International Ed Program Helen Lorimer set a standard of professionalism and humanity that helped chart the way forward. She knew her work. And that knowledge included accepting the imperative of standards but as importantly understanding the needs of learners who were so far from home. She was a true professional and a warm and caring teacher and colleague. Selkirk College was lucky to have had such a member of its family. Craig Andrews
I am sorry to hear about Helen. It's a bit of a blow, really. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared an office with Helen for so long, benefiting from her gentle presence, and wisdom. I'll spend some time with the online memorial tonight. Such a loss. I feel quite privileged to have known her. Laurie Jarvis
Thank you so much for letting me know of Helen's passing. She was such an inspiration when I first started teaching at the college. I was so fortunate to have shared an office with her and to have had her experience to lean on in those early days. She will be forever in my heart and my memories. She will be missed. Thank you for sharing a little of the life of this amazing lady. Shana Rablah

Helen was a much-loved educator in the International Education Department at Selkirk College in Castlegar. She taught English to international students and for many of them, she was one of the first Canadians they had ever met. She graciously shared her wisdom and her sense of caring for each individual with all of us. As a colleague and department head, I valued her advice and her perspective on many occasions.
Helen travelled to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan to represent the College and spent a year as a Visiting Professor at Aichi Konan College, our sister college in Japan. Her elegant and humble nature was much appreciated in Japan, where she became loved by faculty members and students, and especially by her adult students.
Helen will be remembered fondly by her students, colleagues, and friends here in the West Kootenay and in Asia. We all learned so much from her.

Fond memories of a truly lovely lady who adored her family and her late husband. Helen made a huge effort to keep in touch with her large extended family back in Scotland so much so that it encouraged Alan and I to make the trip to Canada 5 years ago. It really was a holiday we will never forget.
Loving thoughts to all of Helen’s family who I know will miss her dearly.
Fondest love from Eileen Alan and family.
Inverurie in Scotland.
