Judy and I were greatly saddened to hear of Harry’s passing. To you and your family, Judy, our heartfelt condolences.
I had the good fortune of having Councillor Lazarenko, who served as Chair of the Riverbank Management Committee for many years, as my political boss. Harry had a genuine interest and commitment to the City’s waterways with a hands on and grass roots approach. His annual boat and snowmobile inspection tours of the riverbanks with fellow politicians, administration, stakeholders and media brought political visibility and a will to successfully implement a riverbank stabilization program for The City of Winnipeg. I was proud to be part of that journey with him. As a champion of the City’s waterways, his crowning achievement of having the Redwood Bridge named in honour of him is a well deserved legacy.
Judy and I were also fortunate to have forged a special friendship with Harry and Judy. We always had many laughs together and felt very relaxed in their company.
Our fond memories of Harry remain close to our heart and will always bring a smile to us.
Rest in Peace Harry. May this bring you strength Judy to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

It is with great sadness that Maria and I learned of Harry’s passing. Our deepest condolences to Judy and the entire family. I had the great privilege of getting to know, learn from and serve on Winnipeg’s City Council with Harry. His heart was always mindful of the best interests of the city and the constituents whose support he always earned. Always affable, friendly, a kind word and hearty laugh the classics ‘Lazarenko twinkle’ in his eyes, were attributes Harry brought to each debate, to each interaction whether individual, group or public hearing. He considered, thought about issues and acted upon them. His core principles and values calibre added value immeasurably. Rest In Peace Harry. May the good Lord now keep you in His watch. Harry and I served together for most of my 26 years as a member of City Council. For many of those years we were members of the Works & Operations standing committee (now Public Works). There were times when you never knew where Harry was going to land on a particular issue but when he committed to support a policy proposal under consideration, you could take that commitment to the bank.
If you wanted to get Harry going on a subject, all you had to do was mention "auto-bins", or "election recount" and away he'd go. the back-story to those issues is far too long to repeat here, but those of us who were there at the time will remember the stories because Harry repeated them often. Sometimes during some heated debates on the Council floor when Harry was in full oratorical flight, I might gently heckle: "tell us about the auto-bins, Harry" and he would stop mid-sentence, then laugh and segue into the auto-bin story.
Harry and I were often on the same page policy-wise but even when we were on opposite sides, we both enjoyed each other's company and there were never any grudges. He was always fun to work with.
Sincere condolences to Judy and family in your time of loss and sorrow, and thanks for sharing Harry with the citizens of Winnipeg for all those years. He will be missed.

As a member of City of Winnipeg Council from 1989 - 1995 I had the privilege & the challenge of being a colleague of Harry Lazarenko during that time frame.
Like others on Council I often disagreed with his political positions taken during debate. But we got to know each other and despite our differences actually had a reasonable relationship away from the political battles.
My first formal encounter with Harry was at the 'Public Works' meeting. I, as a rookie Councillor, arrived early and took my seat. I didn't realize until Harry arrived later that I had taken his unofficial 'reserved seat' in the meeting room. He quickly told me I was in his seat and I moved. Later, I realized this seat was strategic. Close to the delegations that came to meetings and of course close to the media and especially the camera operators from local TV. For Harry, success was often achieved through the media and sometimes by very interesting methods.
But there is no doubt that he never forgot his roots in the north end of Winnipeg and the labour movement he grew up in and the importance of representing them at City Hall. Rarely did he even come close to making a decision outside of those critical elements of his life that formed his persona. Harry always had an opinion on the issue at hand particularly all things that are true Public Works - water & waste management. Brown discoloration in drinking water & separated sewers were his political playground.
But he should be especially remembered for his interest in and representation about the instability issues of our river banks. As the 'Honorary Captain' of the administrative flotilla crew that regularly monitors these situations he proudly completed his annual inspections of the areas of 'fault' and always informed Council of the critical problems ahead. He was right ... "River City" continues to have those problems today! Perhaps we should rename the Harbormasters boat by simply calling it 'Harry' which I think would bring a smile to his often smiling face & especially when it passes the Harry Lazarenko bridge in his beloved North End during regular inspections.
Harry goes down as a legitimate 'legend' who followed his gut instincts and served his constituents wherever and whenever he could in the best way he could.
Rest well faithful servant and my condolences to all members of the Lazarenko family at this time of their grief.
