Mrs. Russell was my grade 2 teacher back in 2000. She was my very first teacher her in Canada when my family and I first moved to Winnipeg.
I vividly remember going to her house with the rest of the class at the end of the school year and we had a blast! The kids taught me how to play a handful of western board games like “Sorry” and “Mouse Trap”. The highlight was when she showed us her pinball machine!
Mrs. Russell randomly came into my thoughts today and I decided to look her up to see if she was teaching anywhere still. It unfortunately brought me to her obituary… Mrs. Russell, thank you for giving me the best first school experience in Canada! I have not forgotten about you and I never will. Rest In Peace, Mrs. Russell.
(Attached below is 7-year-old me with Mrs. Russell in 2000 at Principal Sparling School.)

Our deepest sympathy to Jackie and to Joan's family. We have wonderful memories of Joan. From dancing on the streets off Corydon Avenue on warm summer evenings to the many casino bus trips trying to win the Big One. And the all-girls-trip to New York City where Joan celebrated her birthday with a Carnegie Deli corned beef sandwich instead of birthday cake. Our last trip to Nashville where we saw Carrie Underwood perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Joan loved her music and was a pleasure to travel with.

My deepest condolences to Jackie (she was so proud of you!) and Joan's family. I was so saddened and shocked to learn of Joan's passing. Unfortunately we lost touch over the last few years, but Joan will always hold a special place in my heart, as I was a TA in her classroom at Strathcona School for many years. Then I was lucky enough to have Joan be my co-operating teacher and mentor at Principal Sparling School as I went through the Education Program ("You sure you want to do this?? You know what it's like!" she would always say to me lol) I learned so much from such a strong, intelligent, caring teacher, and I still use her ideas and suggestions in my own classroom to this day. It was so nice to see her at Cecil Rhodes School a few times, even coming in to be a guest teacher in my classrooms a few years ago. Thank you for all of the great memories, your funny stories, your sage advice.

I met Joan at Strathcona School, over 30 years ago. She took me under her wings, and always helped me along the way. Our years spent at Strathcona were our hardest years, but the best in our careers. It was always Joan and Joy!
Living near each other, we became car pool buddies, and that lasted into our years while at Principal Sparling. Some of my fondest memories, were the rides we shared getting Jackie to MBCI, with Ron taking his short cuts, that never were, and the laughter we would share. Jackie tense in the back seat. Probably late for school.
Or driving to Sparling, and realizing how many times Joan came close to road rage. Such a funny lady! I admired that spunk.
I can never forget the many weeks, year after year, Joan would be made to sew sequins on Jackie’s costumes. Everyone heard about it at school. This task consumed her, and oh the cursing! She hated sewing, but loved her Jackie❤️
Joan was a strong educator, with a dedication to her students, like no other.
She was funny, smart, confident, and respected by staff, students and parents.
Joan said it like it is, and for that I loved her.
She was a caring, good friend and I will miss my dear Joany. I am heartbroken, but thankful for the endless, fond memories I have.
My heartfelt sympathies to Jackie, Joan’s siblings, family and all her friends.
Rest peacefully , my dear friend Joan.
Joy Blaine

Jackie we were so sad to hear the news of your Mom’s passing. You have to know that she was as much a part of the Mowat family as your Aunty Marilyn. We all loved her and spending time with her was such fun. I will cherish her visits to Don & Marilyn in Mesa. Sending you our Deepest Sympathies and prayers. Take care of yourself and hold you mother in you heart, she will always be there for you.

My sincere sympathy to Jackie, family and friends. As an EA at Gladstone School, myself and the students were always so happy when Mrs.Russell was the substitute teacher. Respect was something she got and taught! On entering the staff room, I always knew Joan was there from the treats on the table. She had a very SWEET HEART! On some heartfelt moments we had, I feel she is in her husband's arms. May peace be with you. Nadine Hunter

While at Strathcona, Joan was always a great companion for "smoke" break; always had lots to talk about.
After retirement, our coffee dates at the St. Boniface McDonald's with Joan, Joy, Ethel and Gwen were always
fun times with good conversations and a lot of laughs.
When Christmas came around, Joan particularly loved my home-made almond crunch. She always looked forward to it.
Joan would often call or email me to see how I am doing. It is so very hard to believe that she has left before me.
I, as well as many others, will miss her dearly especially her daughter Jackie.
May we all let her live on in our hearts with cherished memories.

I learned of Joan's passing through a mutual friend, and I was shocked that someone that I had been so close to over a long period of time was gone. I taught with her at Wellington School, she was a dedicated teacher, and I thought very highly of her. She will be sadly missed. She was a colleague, that turned into a friend.

OUr heartfelt condolensces to the family. Our daughters were both in Joan's class at Strathcona, I worked with her there and my husband with her at Sparling and Greenway. She made a huge impact on our family with her love of teaching, her friendship and laughter. She will be missed but her spirit will live on.
