Kathy, Kevin, Keith and families. Our deepest condolences for your loss. I have many fond memories of playing ball with Ken whether it was on the East End Reds, Da Bears or Call of the Wild. Ken was a great ball player but more importantly a good friend with an infectious sense of humour. He will be missed but not forgotten. Take care, Mike E and Judy.

I was deeply saddened when my son Ryan informed me of Ken’s passing. I was not aware of his illness. Kathy, I would like to express my sincere condolences to you and your family on your loss. Ken and I were the best of friends through high school and for years beyond. We were more like brothers and were always there for each other. I moved to Calgary in 1983 where I spent 15 years and have now lived in the Toronto area for the past 23 years. So I have lived away for more years than I lived in Winnipeg. Ken and Kevin did come and visit in Calgary but as the years went by we seemed to have lost touch. I regret that, especially today. I reconnected with Jack Dietz when my brother passed away 3 years ago and we were planning to organize a reunion with what we once dubbed the Murdoch quartet (we were hardly singers but had our own theme song which came out when we were a bit tipsy). The quartet consisted of Ken, me, Jack Dietz and Randy Highlands). The four of us spent a lot of time together over the years. Unfortunately, given the onset of Covid, I never got back to Winnipeg so the reunion never got organized. I regret now having not reached out to Ken. My friendship with Ken resulted from our love of sports both as spectators and participants. As spectators we never pulled for the same teams so that was always fun. As participants Ken was very athletic and was better than me in most sports. We had many pick up baseball games at the Murdoch McKay diamonds and as hard as I tried I could never hit a ball or catch a ball as well as Ken. Same with football. He could catch a football better than anyone I ever knew. My son reminds me to this very day how I always use to tell him that. We often went to Transcona stadium to kick field goals and I was actually pretty even with him in that regard. He was a much better hockey player than me and always tried to emulate his idol, Brad Park. We played a lot of golf at Kildonan and Windsor golf courses and we were similar calibre in terms of our golf abilities. The amazing thing growing up was that as good as Ken was as an athlete he never played on organized sports teams. I can’t imagine if he had. On a typical winter weekend we would spend Friday nights at the junior Jets games, Saturday night for drinks at the Maryland Hotel and Sunday mornings playing ball hockey at East End CC. We went on a lot of adventures together whether it was a weekend in Minneapolis to watch hockey or baseball or a Labour Day weekend at Clear Lake. But the adventure that I remember best was when we decide on a whim to drive to California. It was In July of 1971 and Ken, Jack and I decided we were going to do this drive. Ken didn’t have enough money so he sold his old Ford and away we went. We took my Datsun and Ken and I shared the driving. Unfortunately, Ken couldn’t drive a standard so when it was his turn to drive I shifted gears for him from the passenger side until we got up to highway speed. We made it work. We had a number of interesting experiences from freezing in our makeshift tent at night elevation at Yellowstone, to giving away our room and leaving Las Vegas in the middle of the night because it was too hot, to looking for my car in Santa Monica only to find it had been towed away by the LAPD, to watching Willie Mays and my beloved Giants play in San Francisco, to blowing a tire on I-5 near Portland and then having to pay duty at customs for a replacement tire. We picked up Randy and went onto the Calgary Stampede where we hit another heat wave but partied hard and then headed for home. There is a lot more to this story but too much to write. Tears are falling on my iPhone so I will sign off now. I will always remember Ken as one of the good guys. Rest In Peace my friend. Your old friend, Jim Hackett

Kathy and family,
I was very sorry to hear Ken had passed away. He belonged to a distinct class of true gentlemen, always courteous, polite, and extremely honest. Ken was a very modest fellow. He was knowledgeable in many areas, but his specialty was sports. He was our "go-to" guy when we wanted any information on pro athletes contracts or an explanation of any sporting rule.
In the 15 years I golfed with him, he never bragged about his low score game. We'd have to ask him what he shot. I've always felt his talents were underestimated. Ken was a great fellow to know and have as a true friend.
Mavis joins me in extending condolences to you at this sad time.

In memory of my older brother Ken. Ken was the oldest of five children, two brothers, Brian (me) and Jim, and two sisters, Laurane and Diane. Our parents were Jacques and Shirley. Growing up we lived in Transcona, a small town that is now part of Winnipeg. Ken was two years older than me and was the best big brother. He taught me how to ride a bicycle, handed down his paper route to me so that I could make some money, and looked after me when I got into trouble (too often). Ken always did very well in school and taught me to take school seriously so that I could get better grades. Ken was a really good baseball player who understood the intricacies of the game even at a young age. Ken taught me how to throw a curveball and tried to teach me how to hit the ball as well as he did. For me there was a bit of success with the curveball but little success hitting the ball. Still Ken coached me to do the best I could. We played football with friends quite often and Ken seemed always to be on the winning team. Ken practised kicking field goals and became a proficient kicker. After graduating high school Ken finished college and we moved to an apartment where we lived together for two years. Ken and I were fans of the CFLs Winnipeg Blue Bombers and travelled to other cites to watch the Bomber’s road games. It was on a trip to Regina that Ken met his wife Kathleen. They soon married and raised two sons Kevin and Keith. During this time Ken started his career with Manitoba Hydro. He and Kathy moved to Edmonton before returning to Winnipeg. I moved to Toronto and thus he and I lived in separate cities. Over the years we kept in touch by telephone and by visiting each other occasionally. Our conversations were often about family, sports and politics. While we sometimes disagreed Ken always chose to respect my ridiculous opinions. No matter what we discussed Ken was thoughtful and on point. His intelligence always came to the forefront. Ken was an avid golfer and enjoyed the outdoors. Ken loved other sports including hockey and NFL football. His greatest love though was his family, his wife Kathleen, children Kevin and Keith and grandchildren Jordan and Cory. Ken was a kind man would help anyone, especially family in any way he could. Ther are many more memories, too many to discuss here. I miss Ken so much. He was the best big brother I could have hoped for. Cancer has taken another good person before his time. Life is not fair when a really good person leaves us too early. Love Brian
