Obituary of DYLAN MICHAEL EDWARD BUCCI

Dylan Michael Edward Bucci

January 29, 2003-February 19, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our son Dylan after a fierce fight against Ewings Sarcoma. Dylan passed peacefully at home surrounded by his cat Jayde, his family, friends and all his favourite things. He left a profound mark on this world. He was very smart, witty, loving, caring and passionate about many things, but he especially loved music, his cat, and his family.

Our remarkable young man had a wonderfully positive attitude and was always willing to help others and protect those he loved. He admired Roman and Greek Gods, and spent many happy hours playing Dungeons & Dragons, Magic the Gathering and Rockband, as well as board games with his family, reading, online gaming, watching Youtube videos, cooking and listening to all types of music.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dylan attended French immersion at Ecole Lansdowne and Sisler High School. Dylan was very intelligent, and from a very early age he showed an interest in computers and gaming. In Grade 10 he helped to configure Dell servers to communicate with the IBM World Community Grid and provide much needed processing power to the Krembil Research institute for supporting cancer research. Because of this, IBM and Krembil invited him to visit the institute in Toronto to see what his computing power was achieving. This was one of his, and our, proudest moments. He never stopped working with his teacher Robert Esposito – even as the cancer progressed and with COVID-19 restrictions, he ran the program at home and continued his schooling as best he could by working with teachers, the Cyber team and students to maintain the grid. Cyber and Science Squad were his favourite extra-curricular school activities and he missed them dearly when remote

learning hit.

Dylan is survived by his parents, Michael and Terri, his older brother Spencer and partner Emma, our cats, Calypso, Jayde and Marvel, his grandparents, Lynn (Opa) and Mona Korstanje, Terri (Oma) Korstanje, and Bill (Grandpa) and Sharon (Grandma) Bucci, Great Grandmother Mary Lee, Auntie Jackie Wilkie, and uncles and aunts, Paul and Leyda Korstanje, Jay and Sarah Korstanje, Ray and Joanne Lee, Jim Bucci, and Gina as well as by his cousins Danya Primrose, Alex, Alan, Jacob and Mackenzie Lee, Jonathan, Carl and Izik Korstanje. He will also be greatly missed by our extended circle, the Gertley, Chitty and Black families, Jim and Simone Speiss, the Garden Girlz and their families, the Hounsome Clan, his teachers and school friends including Miguel, Delaney and Liam, Rue and Rain, and friends from around the world. Dylan will be missed by his large array of online gaming groups and discord friends. He spent many, many hours playing Dungeons & Dragons, League of Legends, Final Fantasy XIV, Osu, and other games. Our family is as grateful for his online community as much as his in-person friends, as they offered listening ears and provided stress relief and many, many laughs for him and our whole family throughout his disease. No words can express how much that meant to us as a family.

The family sends love, hugs and sincerest thanks to the St. Boniface CancerCare team, Dr. R.Wong, Michelle and Mona, Van and Shauna and the 6E oncology nursing team at St. Boniface Hospital, Dr. D. Perrin and Andrea and the HSC orthopaedic surgery team, Dr. J. Gingerich and Cheryl at CancerCare MacCharles, Dr. Kakumanu, general practitioner Dr. R. Foster, pediatrician, Dr. D. Conner, Dr. Al Buchel (ER) and Dr. Webb and the amazing St. B Palliative Care team. Thanks to all of you, his journey was safe, comforting and smooth during a most difficult time. We love you all very much and consider many of you part of our family.

To honour Dylan’s life and his work, please consider donating to Krembil Research Institute, World Community Grid or Chidren’s Heritage Fund and specify it is for Sisler Cyber Academy - Dylan Bucci Grid Computing Club, or donate to CancerCare Manitoba, Never Alone Foundation, or Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Group.

A celebration of his life is planned for March 19th, 2022 10am-3pm at The Four Crowns Inn (1030 McPhillips Ave.)
