Obituary of SONIA HELEN HUNNIE

(nee Memka)

July 28, 1937-May 15, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Sonia, at the age 84.

She is survived by her daughters Wendy (Lorne) Armette, Cindy (Bruce) Stark, son Carey (Sheryl), and son-in-law Ray McGuire; grandchildren, Craig (Julie,) Jordan, Samantha (Mark), Josh, Laurysa (Ryan), and Travis (Rebecca); and great-granddaughter Cordelia. She also leaves to mourn her brother Bob (Irene), sister Joanne (George), and sister-in-law Zoria.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Joe, daughter Jill, granddaughter Amber, sister Luba, brother Wally, and brother-in-law George.

Sonia grew up in the Point Douglas area of Winnipeg before moving to East Kildonan and eventually St. Vital. She spent many years working at the Winnipeg Winter Club, before she retired to watch the grandchildren.

Sonia and Joe had a cabin at Falcon Lake that she enjoyed for many years.   She loved walking the Cedar Bog trail at Bird’s Hill Park, was an avid bowler and shuffle player and enjoyed going to different restaurants with her family. Another treat was going to any of the grandchildren’s concerts and recitals where she would always be first in line to get the best seats. At Christmas time, Sonia would spend days in the kitchen creating perfectly baked cookies and tarts, gifting tins of an assortment of each to her family. Of course as you know, Sonia’s favourite colour was purple.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bowman Zhou for his compassionate care.

In keeping with her wishes, no funeral service will be held. Cremation has taken place.
