Taras was a man who by his life and example could get things done, and I believe always demanded more of himself than he did of others. He was a true leader, something that is lacking a lot in today's society. He led by example, not out of title or position. He defended others, but never did that when it came to himself. He stood up for others. Even when life was difficult to understand, when it hurt and cost him dearly. He refused to blame. He used his strength to protect others. That is the mark of a true man. It’s the way that strength should be exercised, and on that our world needs now more than ever. He left the world a better place by his life and example, and I am motivated by his role model to seek to do my part in carrying his legacy forward.

I grew up in Dominion City (Janice Knutson) - loved my home town too & had an article published about it in Our Canada - & went to school with both Taras & Janice. I liked them very much. I am SO sorry he struggled with cancer but am glad he's finally free of his struggles. My thoughts & prayers will be with Janice & their family.

Jan & Michael:
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Taras. Jan, your husband was a genuine soul. He cared deeply for the people he worked with and the causes he worked to represent. He was a passionate man who dedicated himself to everyone he considered a friend. He was a strong and charismatic individual the likes of which are rare, especially in the world of politics. Taras drew straight lines in a world that was littered with deception and deceit. If Taras considered you a "friend" you were a privileged Canadian. No body worked harder in the government of our day, than Taras, and no one was more effective in executing the plans that he helped develop in the political arena. He was never fully rewarded for the success he helped all of us achieve.
Bonnie and I would like to thank you and Taras for your support and friendship over the years. You stood with us in some difficult times and we will never forget those bonds.
God bless you and Michael. You can rest assured that your soulmate is working on a special place in heaven for when you meet again.
Bonnie & Paul Staats, Regina.

I was very sorry to learn the sad news of Taras's passing. I first met Taras in 1975 in the grocery store in Dominion City while travelling with Sterling Lyon during the provincial PC leadership campaign. Over the years Taras proved himself an intelligent and exceptionally hard working leader both in politics and subsequently in the hospitality industry. I extend my heartfelt sympathy in your bereavement.

We're so saddened by your loss. We'll never forget the good times we spent with Taras and Janice in grand forks and at home. I attended many meetings with Taras throughout my lifetime either in politics or community service and any time he commented, people listened. He had a way of getting things done when he put his mind to it and Dominion City will be forever grateful for all he brought to this community. We were all saddened when he and his family left DC but he never really left. Our condolences to Janice and Michael from the Chubey family.

Taras was a great Manitoban whose contributions to the progress of our province will never truly be known. He was a loyal and stalwart friend and colleague. When the going got tough, Taras stood tall and unflinchingly pursued the betterment of his cause. He would often say, in deference to my profession, "I am not a communicator but ..." and then he would offer sound advice that would improve our desired end product. His greatest skill was empathy. He understood people, he liked talking to them and listening to them. Most of all, he loved being one of them. His passing leaves a hole in my life that will probably never be filled. I know I am better for having known him, worked closely with him and learned from him. God's speed my friend.

We have so many fond memories of Taras. Bev not only taught him in school, but they enjoyed many sports and fun activities together. Sokolyk"s Store was our main grocery store for my family as we grew up and also for us after we married. He had such a likeable nature and exuded warmth and friendship. Our sincere sympathy to Janice & Michael and all his family and relatives.

Jan and Michael, we are so sorry to hear about Taras. Our hearts are heavy at the loss of this great man and we extend our deepest condolences to you and your extended family. We are grateful for his friendship and support that he has provided to us both over the years. When my Mom was sick with cancer 20 years ago and I quit my job to be with her, it was Taras who gave me part time work from home so that I still had an income and it was Taras who offered to drive a motorhome to the Mayo Clinic when I wanted a second opinion. Taras exemplified true leadership and he did so by leading by example. He was hard working, dedicated, loyal and trustworthy. All of us who had the privilege to work for him, respected him. We will miss his friendship, his opinions, his enthusiasm, his phone calls and the way he jingled coins in his pocket. So many people walk this earth and leave only a small trace of their existence. Know that his large personality has left its mark on so many and that he will be forever remembered and missed. Stacey and Vic
