II'm not surprised at these wonderful stories about Howard's years in Winnipeg as a teacher and wonderful host! I met Howard when we were in high school. I would go over to his house on Fleet St and we would listen to jazz records that he had Dave Brubeck among others and he seemed to have a set of drums up in his bedroom (but I never say them!) (He always seemed to be in the know! I didn’t have any LPs!) But I had a band and he was always around and I convinced him to sing with the band and he was a natural. I wrote special arrangements for the band so he could sing with it. The rest of time he played bongos! (A waltz with bongos!? Only Howard could make it work!) Then I persuaded him to volunteer for a role in a U of M musical Bells Are Ringing (although he didn't then go to the university. A comic part and he was brilliant) He gave me some insights about relationships that meant I ended up in the relationship with my fabulous wife Lori (who passed away 2 years ago.) And he was the best man at our wedding. When Lori and I got married I said to him "You should go to England and be an actor" When we came back after our 3 day honeymoon I called him and his mother said "He went to England!" Occasional letters told of high times with Tom Jones, DJing on the North Sea, villas in Spain, a fabulous multicolored movie. I always said that I spent my life fashioning music into an art as a composer, but he made his life a work of art! I have to say I was envious, because of what he created and how it touched people around him and lifted them up with his flair for living.......Well, he did act again: he was Reginald in Reginald The Robot and the Olaf the cringing servant in The Curse Of Ponsonby Hall both TV specials I composed music for on CTV and he was as usual a brilliant natural actor and singer. One of the most gifted I ever worked with. When we moved to Toronto and I would call and he would answer with "GOOD EVENING!" it was a special pronouncement full of his relish for life and a great uplift to your spirit. It was a very very special gift for us to have known him. Howard we loved every second of life with you and now memories of you.....Thank you for being you and for sharing your life with us.

Howard and my late husband, Roger, had sung together as teenagers, and each went on immersed in their love of different kinds of music. I met Howard and Grace in the 90s, and we quickly became friends. Along with another couple, we formed a Birthday Group, and went on to celebrate each birthday with dinner out and a fine cake later in someone's home. To be the birthday person was an honour, because never before or since have I been treated to such a fine rendition of Happy Birthday in at least 3 part harmony - the men were all singers and more.
One year we visited G and H in Madeira. Howard spoke some Portuguese as they toured us around to all the best sites and sights.
Our birthday group went to Victoria one December to celebrate with Grace, who was laid low from a fall. Howard was doing his best to tend to her needs, though he felt unequal to the task some of that time, while he was trying to entertain us all.
Together Howard and Grace have been the consummate hosts for many events, small or large. Howard happily chose the wine, chose the music, played sous chef to Grace's culinary creations, kept us all engaged in wide-ranging conversations, liberally sprinkled with the witticisms that always had me laughing.
Howard cared for his family, the various generations and extensions, and for Grace's mother. We appreciated his thoughtfulness, his great stories, the depth of his knowledge, and how he could insert music into anything. Never once did I go away without having learned some new factoid or clever bit of trivia from Howard. We loved him, and I will miss this unique gentleman.

There was only one Howard Hicks. Were there more, the world would be a far better place, one of kindness, compassion, cheerfulness, thoughtfulness and good humour. Howard made us laugh, and often at his own expense, as exemplified by an anecdote, which he shared. Addressing his elementary school class – presumably in his typical loquacious manner – Howard felt a tug at his sleeve. “Mr. Hicks. Mr. Hicks. No one is listening, Mr. Hicks.” Well, we listened, Mr. Hicks, and we laughed, again and again. Thank you for that, and for countless other fond memories.

My favorite teacher and most memorable teacher was Mr Hicks. He was my grade 6 teacher 44 years ago at Weston School.
I remember him well. He handed out records as incentives in our classroom. Receiving records for doing school work was so cool. Our class often played volleyball and I remember him buying us donuts many times. At the end of the school year I received an award from him for most improved student of the class. I came out of my shell that year and it was because of him. I always thought of him over the years. Thank you Mr Hicks for being such a great teacher. I will never forget you. I wish I could have told you this in person. My condolences to his family.

Grace and family, I am very saddened to hear of Howard's passing. Howard and I were colleagues my first year of teaching at Weston School. I fondly remember Howard and his quick wit and humour. He would come into the staff room, make some cryptic comment and leave. Had all of us scratching our heads. Loved it! Yes, Howard loved his music. He brought his drum kit into his classroom and entertained the kids. They thought their teacher was the coolest! My deepest condolences.
