Obituary of SYDNEY LESTER
SYDNEY (SID) ROBERT LESTER
1924 - 2013
Sid passed away on Friday, February 1 at Kildonan Personal Care Home.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Esther, his daughter and son-in-law Sylvia and Pat Sloan and special friend Elsie Childerhouse.
Left to celebrate his life are his children Donna, Sidney (Norma), Lyle (Charlotte), Paul (Eva) and Dave (Lori); his grandchildren, Sean, Christine (Clint), Kyle (Ardy), Shawn, Scott, Nicole (Chris), Jackie (Mateo), Danielle, Tara, Hailey and his six great grandchildren.
Sid met and married the love of his life, Esther, in 1947 and together they raised their six children in East Kildonan.
He served in RCAF during WWII and later became journeyman Steamfitter. He continued to serve his country with the Department of Defense where he was employed at Kapyong Barracks for over 30 years before retiring.
Sid loved to be outside. In his younger years he could always be found in a field, marsh or on a lake. There was always goose, duck or fish on the table for Sunday dinner. Sid passed this love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors down to his children who in turn passed it on to their children and now that passion is being passed onto his great grandchildren.
Dad also loved to garden. His pride and joy were his geraniums and Beefsteak tomatoes which he started from seed in the spring.
The one place Dad was most happy was the cottage at Lester Beach. He spent endless hours on the beach, in the water and blueberry picking.
In the winter Dad enjoyed Round and Square dancing first with Mom and then his friend Elsie. He travelled Canada and United States to enjoy this past time.
Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 11 at 10:00 a.m. at St Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 35 Marcie Street with Rev.Fr. Mark Gnutel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to St. Alphonsus School or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
The family would like to thank the staff of the third floor at Kildonan Personal Care Home for allowing the last two years of Dad's life to be lived in comfort and dignity.
