Obituary of JEAN DROZD
JEAN DROZD
June 28, 1927 – January 9, 2023
Sadly, we announce the passing of our mother, Jean Drozd (Mryglod), aged 95 on January 9th, 2023. Predeceased by her husband Peter (1968), sisters Lucy (1994), Anne (1995) & brother Alec (2004). She leaves to mourn her three daughters: Nellie Drozd (Stefan Szuminsky), Elsie (Gord) Kozak, & Julie Land: her grandchildren Nadia (Ilya) Senchuk, Michael (Melissa) Kozak, Angela Kozak, DJ (Rhett) Bonham & Derek (Trevyna) Fisk; and 6 great grandchildren: Yuri, Ruslan & Luba Senchuk, Isla, Amelia & Matilda Kozak.
Jean was born in Sylvan, Manitoba. She grew up a country girl but moved to Winnipeg in her early twenties where she met her future, loving husband Peter. Together they operated the grocery store at 50 Grove Street in the Point Douglas area. It was here where they also began raising their three daughters. In 1964 they moved to East Kildonan where mom had resided since.
Our parents loved to entertain family and friends playing the card games Hola or Crazy 8’s, and singing and dancing to Ukrainian music. Tragically, in 1968, her husband was killed in a car accident so mom became a widow with three young children. She had to learn how to take care of her husband’s business dealings and also to drive a car. Whenever mom had a visitor, before the person sat down, the fridge was open and food was put on the coffee table along with some Manischewitz wine. A guest never left hungry after a visit.
Mom enjoyed bowling, playing bingo in the bingo halls (and later on T.V.’s Kinsmen Jackpot Bingo) and cooking Ukrainian food. To her, borscht was the best medicine you could take. She had a passion for flowers and loved tending to the live plants outside and silk flowers inside. Our home was a very colourful one. Her other passion was garage sale-ing, not because she needed anything but because she loved bartering with the seller and walking away with items bought at her price. She always found room in the house for more silk flowers.
Her family was her greatest joy. She loved receiving photographs and finding places to display them. Mom was a loving, fun person who was fortunate to live a long life - healthy for the most part and able to enjoy the family her and Peter extended. She will be truly missed but our wonderful memories will remain.
The family would like to thank her thoughtful neighbours, Jenny & Lawrence Blahuta, Maria, Albert & Cary Duncan who kept a helpful eye on mom particularly in her later years.
Thank you also extends to Case Coordinator Pamela Beuckert at Access River East and her homecare team for their reliability and excellent care.
The funeral will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Friday, January 13th at 9:30 a.m.
Love you, Miss you
