Sincere condolences to Mrs Tostowaryk and family. Mrs Tostowaryk was my grade 5 teacher at Montrose School in Winnipeg in 1959. By coincidence years later I was Dr Tostowaryk’s summer field technician near Grand Mere, Quebec in about 1970 when I was an undergrad student at McGill. Both Mrs and Dr T. were great teachers and mentors. I later went on to get my own PhD and had a 33 year career as a field biologist and manager. Thanks to the Tostowaryks for your inspiration and many kindnesses.

Along with Byron Rogers and Don Wigle, I too worked with Wally at the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control in Ottawa. Wally was a work colleague and a good friend. We were also cottage neighbours. The Tostowaryk cottage was on Christie Lake while ours is on nearby Farren Lake. We went on fishing trips together, a memorable one being to Taylor Lake in northern Lanark county. Fish were caught! When our Farren Lake cottage suffered storm damage, Wally did not hesitate to answer the call for help to repair the roof and hydro mast. Wally will always be remembered as a good colleague and a good friend.

Our deepest sympathy to Aunt Joan, cousin Tracey, Aaron and Sophie
With love from Karen Tostowaryk, Steve, Trevor, Jason and Ryan (Ottawa)
It is with deep sadness that we learned of Uncle Wally's passing. He lived to a rich old age, much like our dad/ his brother George who predeceased him by five years. We remember fondly the times spent together in Ottawa and at Lake Christie. Wally and Joan were always there to welcome us to their home. Our boys particularly loved "frog hunting": at your cottage with Sophie and Aaron. Uncle Wally was always kind, fun-loving and ready to engage in discussion. My dad and Uncle Wally would recount stories from their childhood and make us proud to be Tostowaryk. May you rest in peace Wally and we shall continue to cherish your being.

I am very happy to have met and to have known Mr. Tostowaryk. You might wonder why I refer to him as “ Mr. Tostowaryk” and that’s because he was one of my main neighbours I knew growing up as a kid and as a kid, everyone was a Mr. or Mrs. I remember Mr. Tostowaryk as being a kind, helpful, always smiling neighbour and friend of the family. I distinctly remember him always taking care of his property and home and on weekend afternoons he and my Dad would chat on the driveway in the middle of their weekend raking/mowing/landscaping duties…probably to talk about something science related. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to Tracy and family and Joan, or as I would know her as, Mrs.Tostowaryk.

I worked with Wally at the lab Center of Disease Control in Ottawa and remember him with fondness, as a very helpful, congenial, happy and enthusiastic co-worker. His presence was a contribution to the work that had to be done and the congeniality that the work environment benefited from.

I worked with Wally (as we called him) in the early years of Health Canada’s Tobacco Control Program. Not only a really nice guy, but without his grasp of statistics we’d have been lost. I haven’t been able to keep in touch with my former colleagues that well, but I have fond memories of working with Walter that date back to the early 1980s.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

Our sincere condolences to you Joan, daughter Tracey, granddaughter Sophie, and grandson Aaron upon the passing of your husband, father and grandfather.
Wally’s kindness and helping spirit were once more abundantly clear the last time Joan and Wally visited with us at our home this past autumn. We described how we were attempting to fix the eaves trough on the house, and immediately Wally had exquisite common sense repair suggestions, and wanted to begin making repairs right then and there. He appeared completely rejuvenated at having a challenging project to tackle.
It’s amazing, isn’t it, how the moment of Wally’s passing can alter the world as we used to know it. Just as Joan, Tracey, Sophie and Aaron miss Wally profoundly, we too have a void in our hearts. Undeniably, all of our individual worlds have now changed.
American author Anne Lamott shares some relevant comments with us on the topic of death, as follows: “You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart…. And you come through.”
We may also take comfort in the words of the Judaism Prayer Book which remind us of the following truth… “So long as we live, they too shall live. For they are now a part of us as we remember them.” Wally will always be with us in our memory.
Our love and blessings to cousin Joan, and Tracey, Sophie and Aaron.
