Obituary of BRIGITTA RAABE
Brigitta Raabe
It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the passing of their dear mother Brigitta on January 30, 2023 at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg surrounded by her family.
She was predeceased by her two brothers – Gerhard (who never returned home from the war), and Walter, as well as her husband Kurt who passed away in 1996 just one month short of their 40th wedding anniversary.
She leaves to mourn her 4 children Thomas, Michael (Shelley), Norbert (Kathy) and Monica, as well as her 5 grandchildren Chelsea, Chase, Nicole, Taryn and Ryan.
Mom was born in Obrawalde, Germany on April 5, 1929. After finishing school, she worked a number of jobs, most notably as a clinical office assistant for a medical practice which she enjoyed immensely. After the war was over, she met her future husband who then emigrated to Canada in 1955 to find work as a carpenter, and once he had secured employment, he asked her to come to Canada as well, arriving by ship later that year. They married in 1956 with a small wedding service attended by a few close friends. They soon started a family and became entrenched in the Canadian culture, but never forgetting their roots.
Dad worked very hard to provide for his family with little income and mom also worked outside the home for a while to provide a good life for her children.
Her greatest joy in life was her children and grandchildren, and the many close friends she made in the Kolping Society of Winnipeg at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church which she cherished until the end. She was a good cook and an even better baker, and hardly a Sunday went by without a fancy torte or a German apple cake or cheese cake when entertaining close friends at home.
Mom and Dad took a number of trips back to Germany later in life to visit family and friends, and enjoyed their company when when they came to visit in Canada.
The family thanks all the staff at Concordia Village Assisted Living, and the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg for their care and compassion in the last years of her life.
A celebration of Brigitta's life will take place on Thursday February 9, 2023 with interment at 1:30 PM (NE corner of the cemetery) at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens 4477 Main St., West St. Paul, MB. This will be followed by a funeral service and luncheon at the Funeral Centre on site.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
We love you mom; may you rest in peace and eternal life be yours.
