Obituary of LARRY RONALD STEKLER
Larry will be sadly missed by his sister Debbie, nephew; Kyle and niece; Meghan along with all the close friends who had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with him. His memories will be cherished and held close to our hearts forever.
Larry was predeceased by his dad Walter, mom Nettie and brother Dave.
Larry grew up in the Elmwood area where he made many lifetime friends. He was an “all-round athlete” involved in a number of sports. Growing up he received quite an array of trophies, medals and awards which he was very proud of and still to this day had them showcased on top of the fireplace in the rec room.
Larry’s career started out as a paraprofessional in the Physical Education Department at Chief Peguis School. He later received his Business Administration Certificate at Red River College and worked for the Federal Government for 38.5 years. He was a playing coach for the Government baseball league of 18 teams and came up on top winning the championship 2 years in a row.
Larry loved his cabin (“Bubbly Haven”) which is located on Lake Winnipeg. He lived and breathed “Bubbly Haven”. He could literally tell you every spring for the past 10 years the exact date he opened the cabin. He loved spending his summers hanging out at the lake, and always welcomed friends and family for weekends full of fun and laughter. He also enjoyed hosting “Theme Parties”, “Hot Tub Parties” and the annual “Bubbly Haven Classic Golf Tournament”. Friends were always welcomed after 4 in the afternoon for “Caesar Time” which if you had the pleasure of tasting one of his caesars you would say he had perfected the recipe! There was never a shortage of things to do at the lake; between projects, cutting grass and playing games of horseshoes, bocce ball, corn hole, ladder toss and beer pong. Larry always looked forward to the evening when he would make a bonfire and invite his friends over to share memories, tell some jokes and toast a few GM’s. That was all part of the “Bubbly Haven” experience as he would say!
Friends were a big part of Larry’s life. Whether it was a birthday, anniversary, holiday or just to say hello, he always made the time to let you know he cared. If you ever received a card from Larry, you knew the message he wrote was sincerely from the heart. He would always say “Friends are the family you choose”.
Larry was one in a million and had a heart of gold. He basically led a 70’s era bachelor lifestyle and was definitely a creature of habit. His motto was “If it’s not broken don’t fix it”.
A Celebration of Larry’s life will be held this summer at Bubbly Haven.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care.
The family extends their heart filled appreciation to the wonderful, supportive and compassionate staff at Cancer Care and Riverview Health Centre. Also, a big Thank You to Larry’s many friends who visited and called him at the hospital and at home. He truly appreciated your support!
