SOPHIA ROBERTA DIANE ANDRINIUK

Sadly, on March 20, 2023, Sophia Andriniuk passed away with family at her side. She was at 90 years…three weeks shy of turning 91.

She is survived by her daughter Kathryn, grandchildren, Robert and Jennifer (Mike), great grandchildren, Alexander and Grace, her brother, Bert, and numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Annie, and siblings, Mary, Bill, Martha, John, Florence, Fred, and Jean.

Sophia was born in the Kerr’s Lake area and attended the local one-room schoolhouse that accommodated eight grades. Later she was proud to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a supply technician from 1952 until her honourable release in 1956. She always maintained that she enjoyed the marching the best. It was just like dancing – only to a different beat.

Throughout her life she often worked at two, sometimes three, jobs at once. She mostly spent time as an office worker by day and, for a time, an AVON representative in the evenings and/or on weekends. She would also take extra part-time work which followed in the evening after her day job was done. Her last position was at Air Canada as a Commissionaire before she retired in 1997.

Dancing was Sophia’s passion. She could be seen on the dance floor regularly at Legion 141 (Selkirk Ave) and Club 13 (Main St). She also had a talent for playing instruments…by ear. Occasionally, she’d be walking through the music section in Eaton’s, the Bay, or Simpson Sears, pick up a guitar or accordion and start playing. Soon, she’d have a small appreciative audience stopped to listen. She also played a diatonic harmonica that she had at home….as well as a button accordion.

Sophia’s family would like to thank the comfort care staff, Jan and O’Neill at the 7 Oaks Hospital where she spent her final hours.

The viewing will be on Tuesday, March 28th from 7:00  – 8:30 p.m.at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 29th at 10:00 a.m. at St Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St. Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Kerrs Lake Cemetery, Kerrs, MB.
