Obituary of IVAN PAULIC

We announce with great sorrow and profound sadness the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ivica (Ivan) Paulić on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 with his family by his side.

 

He leaves to mourn, his wife Milka, his children, Marija, Franjo (Tricia), and Jelena (Marijan), grandchildren Antony (Ola), Nikola, Adriana (Daniel), Madeline, Owen, Ben and great grandson Ilija. Also, his beloved sister Janjo (Vinko) and his brother-in-law Mišo (Eleanor). In addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins within Canada, USA, Australia, and Croatia.

 

Ivica was a tough, strong and giving man with a big heart and a great smile. He was born May 10^th, 1940 in Strmačka, Cetingrad, Croatia. He loved life on the farm and his days were filled with hard work, but he always had time to roam in the woods and hills.

 

Ivica and Milka were married and a few years later decided to immigrate to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1965. He loved the Croatian community and was very proud of his Croatian heritage.

 

Life wasn’t easy and as a newcomer, he tried many jobs from making shoes, sewing jeans, truck driving and welding before finally deciding on carpentry and construction. He really enjoyed building homes and joked that he was a foundation specialist. Ivica built his own home in Winnipeg and a cottage in White Mud Falls, Manitoba. He had a very strong work ethic and was a morning person. He was usually the first person to the work site and would often start to work before sunrise much to the annoyance of the neighbours in the developments where he was working. He worked in many developments in Winnipeg and knew his way around Winnipeg very well. When he retired in 2006, we would often go for family car rides and point out all the homes he helped to build.

 

He loved spending time at the cottage. There he relaxed, enjoyed fishing, tending to the garden, doing odd jobs and eating the best smoked fish he ever had.

 

His other interests and hobbies were playing bocce ball at Kildonan Park with the Croatian crew, doing home renovations, and playing cards and bingo.

 

He was a self-taught handyman and had a desire to know how things worked. He had no fear in taking things apart and putting them back together. At one point he had a collection of nine lawn mowers which he picked up from back lanes and fixed.

 

He also liked to play the lottery. He would win some and lose some and was always writing down numbers on scrap pieces of paper and asking family and friends for winning numbers to play. He also liked to spend time at McDonald’s and Tim Horton’s, also known as “the office”. He loved to have people around him and enjoyed talking with everyone. He even tried to start his own coffee club at Riverview in the short time he was there. The family would like to thank everyone on 2 West at Riverview Health Center for their compassion and care of our Dad during his time there.

As per his wishes, a small private family funeral service was held on Monday, May 1, 2023 with Reverend Father Peter Nemcek presiding followed by interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
