(IWASIUK)

Olga passed away on May 24, 2023 surrounded by her family. Olga was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, baba, pra-baba and friend.

She is survived by her daughter Donna (Bob), sons Bill (Debbie), Ed (Colette), grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul), Blair (Mitch) , Curtis (Jamie) , Laurel (Mike), Faith and Rylee, great grandchildren, Blake and Ariana, sister-in-law Mary (John) of Edmonton and extended family across the west. Olga was predeceased by her husband Ed, parents, Bill and Mary, infant sister Sonia, in-laws, Barbara, Peter and John.

Mom was born in Saskatoon in 1932, to Ukrainian immigrants and grew up with extended family around Meacham. She was a book-keeper, farmer, sewer, business owner, red-cross quilter, curler and church volunteer but most important to her was her role as wife and mother.

Mom loved all Ukrainian traditions and practiced them with great joy. Her traditional Kolachi and Paska breads were without compare. She loved baking for family, friends and church coffee hour, her poppy seed chiffon cakes were delightful. Her Easter basket was praised every year as one of the most beautiful. At Easter Breakfast after attending church and blessing of the basket, all in attendance knew that the egg had to be eaten first. Mom made the most beautiful pysanky and taught many the art of writing an egg. Christmas Eve dinner was prepared for the family with love and everyone got to enjoy delicious leftovers. Though she never embroidered she kept many works of art that her mother created. Mom attended many events, every grandchild could count on her to be watching them in concerts, choral, drama, dance or music, in-school presentations or graduation ceremonies. Education was very important to her.

Mom and dad made homes in Saskatoon, Elstow, Calgary and Winnipeg. Mom was very good at making friends quickly and keeping them. Mom had beautiful penmanship and writing letters to family and friends was a pleasure for her. Mom was a devoted member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, including serving as President of the Women’s Association in Calgary. Wherever Mom was she enjoyed pinching perogies, helping at any or all fundraisers, loved seniors group, and committed fully to participating in activities. As she aged, curling changed to cards and bingo, gardening changed to learning floral arranging and enjoying arts and crafts and word find. Mom lived independently until age 85, and then enjoyed Devonshire House assisted living.

The family wants to acknowledge the homecare aides that helped mom live in her apartment until she became a resident at Holy Family Home. THANK YOU to the staff on 2A for the compassionate care given to mom and her family during moms last days. It made this journey full of love!
