Obituary of DARLENE GAYLE PERRY

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Darlene Perry, on May 28, 2023 with her family by her side. Darlene was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and friend. She was predeceased by her parents Ted and Edna Davidson (nee Jones).

She leaves to cherish in her memory: husband John, daughters Cynthia and Michelle (Dave) and grandchildren Henry and Liam. She also leaves behind her: sister Barb (John), brother Wayne, brothers-in-law Sheldon (Glenys) and Keith (Catherine) and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. All were precious to her.

Darlene was the guiding light of the family with her warm and welcoming nature. Her interest in everyone’s lives was genuine and heartfelt. Her friendly nature was evident in that strangers would often start talking to her sensing that Darlene was a safe person to be trusted. This trustworthiness was also shown by dogs always sitting on her feet even though she wasn’t a dog person. After much resistance, she did become a one dog mom with Alex adoring her and becoming her constant companion.

Darlene grew up in Transcona and spent many wonderful summers at the family cottage in Ottermere. Her loving character lead Darlene into nursing. She graduated from St. Boniface School of Nursing, along with her best friend Glenna Germain, in 1969. She worked at St. Boniface Hospital and then ICU at Concordia Hospital until her retirement in 2006.

She married the love of her life in 1970 and moved to Birds Hill in 1973. It was there she raised her family and was part of St. Catharine’s Church and the East St. Paul Curling Club communities. Darlene also volunteered at her girls’ Girl Guide events and was the camp nurse for many years.

When her grandchildren arrived, she was the first to volunteer to hold them and help out. She said she was lucky they were twins so she could always hold one. She was so very proud of all their accomplishments.

Thank you to the staffs at River Ridge 2 Retirement Home and Holy Family Home for the dedication and care they showed Darlene in her final years.

If you wish in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
