JOÃO MARQUES

Obituary of JOÃO TEIXEIRA MARQUES

We regretfully announce the passing of João Teixeira Marques on June 7, 2023, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, godfather, and friend.

João was predeceased by his parents, José Joaquim Marques and Maria Albertina and siblings Antonio (Alzira), Ana (Manuel), Manuel (Rosa) and Casimiro (Ana). He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ilda, sons John (Paula) and Carlos (Elizabeth), grandchildren Tomaz, Melissa, Nicholas, and Julius, sisters Rosalina (Abilio), Constança (João), Conceiçao (Julio), and countless nieces and nephews.

João was born in Revel, Portugal where he spent most of his young life. In 1962, after spending 4 years in the military in Angola and Mozambique, he immigrated to Canada to make a better life for his family. Most of João's career was spent as an ironworker primarily working at hydro stations across Manitoba. He was well respected by the many people he worked with.

After retirement, João enjoyed his annual trips to Portugal. However, his biggest joy was returning to Winnipeg and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who were always the light of his life.

Anyone who knew João, knew that he was incredibly kind-hearted, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends and would regularly meet up with them at his favourite coffee shop. He loved gardening, making wine and took tremendous pride in tending to his apple trees and vegetable garden. He was always generous and ready to send you home with some apples or vegetables.

A celebration of João's life will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church 181 Austin Street N. with prayers on Tuesday, June 13 at 7:00 pm and celebration of Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, June 14 at 1:00 pm, followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery 3990 Portage Avenue W.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in João's memory to Diabetes Canada.

Beijinhos e um grande abraço, you are now at peace and will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much. Rest in peace.
