Thank you Lori, Martina and Ursula, Madla was always happy to hear your dad's voice. They both loved to tell stories about where they grew up; it was comforting to my Mom to hear and tell those stories with someone who knew the same place and people. It brought my Mom joy. Thank you, Martin

Thinking of the whole family at this time. Sorry for the loss of the pillar Martha was - a great example of resilience, honesty, decency, integrity, the brightness of life. So many memories through most of my life. A long life well lived - loving and loved. Occasionally reflected upon her (from places far afield) and how quite different lives intersected and yet retained a real sense of closeness. No doubt Martha will be missed. May she rest in peace. Love to the family.

Thanks John, and so true - she was a pillar in so many ways. She always looked forward to receiving your postcards from who-knows-where over the years! Once you and Corinne moved away from Winnipeg she frequently asked me for updates on how you were doing, how your kids were and your siblings too. Your parents were true friends as well, and welcomed her (and us) into their circle. That friendship was very important to her.

On Wednesday, we celebrate the life of Martha Bolbecher, a woman who had become very dear to me the past few years.
My “mother-in law” was a role mode on staying active your whole life. She rode her bike and swam several times a week till her late 80’s. She even swam in Lake Winnipeg a couple of times at the age of 93. She walked outside everyday if possible and indoors in the mezzanine or even down the hallway when the weather was too much. Several years ago, before I met Martha, I was having coffee with Martin at Starbucks on Broadway Avenue; I pointed out to Martin this little elderly lady walking down the street. He replied, “that’s my Mom.”
Before COVID, Martha would take the DASH bus to the Millennium Library. She would go to the lunch hour mini-concerts. She would then walk back home but would make a quick stop at the Shark Club and play the VLTs. My first (and only) time in a casino was with her in Saskatoon. She was happy to show me how to play her favorite one. She was lucky and often won at the casino and at bingo. She bought a single raffle ticket and won a trip to Churchill, which she gifted to Martin and me. Martha loved to play cards. We would play rummy every Sunday evening and she had no trouble counting her cards. I would often say to her that her mental math abilities in her 90’s were better than many of my high school students!
Martha loved Kota (our chocolate lab) and would bring him treats. She often asked how my kids were doing. She regularly enjoyed a glass of Crown Royal or schnapps. A couple of days before her passing, we were able to take her to the Forks Commons for a beer.
She had quite the life, an amazing woman. Martha, you will be missed.
