At her residence, at Holy Family Home, on Monday, June 19, Luba Shchudlo, aged 91, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, passed away.
Luba was survived by her children: Ihor Andrew (Kelly); George (Marlene); Lesia; and Eugene. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Loren, Sarah, Andri, Nikolai, Jolene; Benjamin; Leah; and Steven, and great-grandchildren, Pietro, Elliot, Stella, and Sabella. She is also survived by her sister, Nadia Kubas, numerous nieces and nephews and her dear friend of 78 years, Nadia Shawarsky.
She was predeceased by her parents, Anisia and Walter Sawchuk, her husband, Steve, her sister, Olena and her brother, Alex, and her infant grandson, Matthew.
Born on March 15, 1932, in Rivne, Volyn region, Ukraine, she was forced to emigrate in 1944 as a refugee, first to Germany and then to Winnipeg in June, 1950.
A month after arriving in Winnipeg, Luba met her future husband, Steve, at a wedding where both were in the wedding party. Afterwards they started dating and married a year later. Luba went on to lead a busy life raising four children. Throughout this time, she was involved in her Ukrainian community, in church, singing in the choir, and later, worked at Great West Life for 23 years.
After the death of her beloved husband, Steve, she led a life of retiree relaxation and enjoyment taking part in so many activities at both Donwood South Senior Apartments and Holy Family Home. Games, singing, travelling, Luba did it all. Throughout all of this activity, Luba was the most extraordinary cook, bringing joy and pleasure to her family always, with traditional Ukrainian dishes.
We would like to thank the staff of Holy Family, in particular the staff on 4A, and Drs Andrea and Terry Babick, for their kindness and care which made her feel truly special.
