Obituary of DORIS TERNOWETSKY

DORIS TERNOWETSKY (NEE LUCZYK) January 22, 1916 – March 7, 2013 It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of one of Winnipeg’s best, Doris Ternowetsky, a remarkable woman who lived her long life to the fullest extent-a blessing and inspiration to all she met. Doris passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the age of 97, in her own bed at the Holy Family Home in Winnipeg. Doris will be lovingly remembered by daughter-in-law Carroll; grandchildren Troy (Eva), Natalie, Tania (Michael), Alexander; great grandchildren Matthew, John, Jillian and Evan; brother Alec (Sadie); sister Alice (Tom); sister-in-law Ollie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Ahafia; her husband Bill; her sons Gordon and Dennis; her grandson Joseph; her sisters Anne Ewasyke, Mary Morris and Clara Badiuk and her brother Mike. Doris was the second eldest of 7 children born to Canadian pioneers, who came from the Ukrainian, Province of Bukovina, Chernivtsi region. Doris grew up in the district of Elmwood and attended George V Elementary School, Lord Selkirk Jr. High and St. John’s Technical School. At a very early age Doris attended Ukrainian School which was held a nearby private home-teacher Mr. Feduk. She also attended the National Greek Orthodox Church of St. Michael on Disraeli St. and was one of the first students that attended a Ukrainian School in the Church that was established by Reverend Boyzk. Over the years Bill’s business interests took them to Fort Frances, Hudson, Moose Jaw and Winkler. Doris raised her two sons in addition to taking a very active role in the community. She served on parent teacher boards, executive of the South Manitoba Music Festival and was a member of the Southern Manitoba Philharmonic Choir as well as fundraising appeals Doris helped to organize the first Kyiv Pavillion at Folklorama. Eventually the couple returned to Winnipeg rejoining the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and the Lesia Ukrainian Branch of the Ukrainian Women’s Association. Throughout her life, Doris was happiest when she was entertaining a big group of family and friends, there always had to be singing and refreshments. She will always be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her cheerful sense of humour and her unique ability to provide a song, a rhyme, a quip for any occasion in either Ukrainian or English. Special thanks to all the caring staff at Holy Family Home for the loving kindness and respect given to Doris over the years. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main Street. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at 10:00 a.m.also at the Cathedral. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. VICHNAYA PAM’YAT
