Obituary of HELENA NADIA BOHONOS
Helena Nadia Bohonos
April 14, 1936 - November 9, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helena Bohonos, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister at Grace Hospital, November 9th, 2023 at the age of 87 years.
She leaves to mourn her loving family: sons Peter and his partner Norma Jean of Winnipeg and Andrew, wife Jackie, grandchildren Nadia and Ryan of Sherwood Park, AB, sisters-in-law Roslyn Bohonos of Edmonton and Connie Sarchuk of Winnipeg and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by Nestor, her loving husband of 51 years, her parents Wasyl and Anastasia Sarchuk, and brother Alex.
Helena was born in Saskatoon in 1936 and moved with her family to Winnipeg in 1941. She attended Normal School and became a teacher. She married Nestor in 1956 and taught until the birth of her second son in 1961. She worked as a substitute teacher for several years before starting a 22 year career at the Winnipeg Free Press working mostly in obituaries.
Aside from being a renowned thespian and mathematician, Helena was a long time member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and was heavily involved with the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada - Lesia Ukrainka Branch, where over the years she served as president and secretary. She also served for decades as an executive member of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada (Winnipeg Collection at the Holy Trinity Cathedral). Her interests were baking, reading and Ukrainian history.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 16th at 10:30 AM at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, 1175 Main St and then a reception at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Women’s Museum of Canada, Manitoba Branch or the Grace Hospital. Special thanks to the staff at the Grace who helped make Helena’s last days comfortable and pain free.
We will miss Helena’s presence in our lives, but her thoughtfulness, kindness of heart and good nature will be in our hearts and minds forever.
