JOHN SHEAD

Obituary of JOHN SHEAD

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of John Shead on Thursday, December 21, 2023 in Selkirk, Manitoba.

John was predeceased by his first wife, Florence in 1990 and just recently his son, Guy.

Left with a huge void in our lives and hearts; son, Garth (Donna) Shead; daughter, Jodene (Bill) Donald; daughter-in-law, Teresa Shead; grandchildren, Nicole (Andrew), Ryan (Kandace), Graeme (Taylor), Matthew (Holly), Trevor (Valorie), Rachel and Andy; and wife, Joyce Shead. He is also survived by his siblings; Joy (Ted) Kayer, Betsy Ann (late James) Sternat, Lorne (Joan) Shead, Frank (Irene) Shead.

John was born in Selkirk April 10, 1937 to Jack and Dorothea Shead. Mom and Dad married on September 14, 1963, celebrating 26 wonderful years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling; going to places like Barbados, Aruba, Switzerland and Germany, just to name a few. As the family began to grow, memories were created visiting Florida, California, a Caribbean cruise and many years of camping.

John felt very fortunate to work at Air Canada for 32 years, retiring in 1991. This was a place where many lifelong friendships were formed.

Our Dad was a proud community member, awarded with Selkirk’s Citizen of the Year in 2001. Dressing up as Santa for many families for countless years on Christmas Eve, playing Santa at Betel Home and the Selkirk General Hospital, volunteering for Dreams Take Flight, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity. Many years of his dedicated volunteer work made our Dad the perfect candidate for this award.

On August 10, 2001, John married Joyce and together they enjoyed travelling. Barbados was their favourite place to travel as well as visiting family across Canada. The house on Maple Drive sold and they moved into their condo at Kiwanis on the Red, where many new friendships were made.

Our Dad and Papa leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and a life well lived. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our family would like to thank the Dialysis Unit at Selkirk Regional Health Centre, Dr H. Demsas, Dr R. Wong, Selkirk Mobility and the Staff at Betel Home Selkirk.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Selkirk United Church, 202 McLean Avenue, Selkirk, Manitoba.
