Obituary of MARIA DO CARMO COSTA LOURENCO

Maria do Carmo Lourenco passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday evening, February 11, 2024, at Middle Church Personal Care Home in Winnipeg at the age of 75, after a short battle with heart disease. She was predeceased by her parents, Maria de Lurdes and Guilherme, her brothers Jose and Carlos, and her sister Maria Helena.

Maria do Carmo is survived by her husband, Raul, children Lendor (Sheryl), Sandy (Chad), and grandchildren Cody, Owen, Austin, Blake, and Emersyn. She also leaves behind brothers Antonio (Maria Helena), Guilherme (Graca), Manuel (Linda), John (Anabela), and sisters Odilia (Antonio) and Germana (Daniel), as well as brother-in-law Jacinto and sisters-in-law Maria dos Anjos and Vidalia, and many nieces and nephews.

Maria do Carmo was born and raised in Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal, and immigrated to Canada in 1973. After marrying the love of her life in Thunder Bay, Ontario, they relocated to Winnipeg in May of 1973. After making Winnipeg their home, Maria do Carmo worked at Klondike Sterling Glove for over 25 years, manufacturing leather winter gloves to keep everyone warm through our crazy winters. Family members always had the best and warmest gloves around.

Maria do Carmo enjoyed cooking food for others and preparing dishes for many social events. She made her own chorizo (Portuguese sausage), which many said was the best. She could spend countless hours knitting away, making blankets and shawls for friends and family. Any time you drove by her home, you would be sure to see Maria do Carmo sitting on the outdoor bench or front step, talking to friends and family who would often stop by for a visit. She was devoted to her faith and never missed a Sunday mass. Most importantly, Maria do Carmo was a devoted wife, an amazing mother, and an incredible Avo (grandma). Her grandchildren were the loves of her life and were always the first topic of any conversation.

A viewing and rosary will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 9:00 am at Immaculate Conception Parish with Father Andre Lico presiding. Interment will follow at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, where all are welcome to attend.

The family would like to thank all the Middle Church Personal Care Home staff members for their love, support, and compassion throughout her final days.
