Obituary of HELEN MARGARET NAHERNY
HELEN MARGARET NAHERNY
1931-2024
With heavy hearts we announce the death of Helen Naherny on February 11, 2024 in Winnipeg. Born July 6, 1931, she was the youngest and last surviving member of her generation. Predeceased by 5 siblings: Jean (Mike) Dennis, John (Helen) Moskal, Mike (Olga) Moskal, Joe (Lorna) Moskal, Frank (Elsie) Moski.
Helen leaves to mourn 3 children: Marilyn (Cameron) Bjornson, Margaret Bryner, Bill Naherny; 2 grandchildren: Eric (Annik) Bjornson and Lisa Bjornson; 2 great-grandsons Jack & Luke Bjornson. Along with her former husband & friend Norman Naherny; also 2 nieces & 4 nephews, two of whom will be serving as pallbearers.
Our mother lived her entire life in Winnipeg. Born & raised in the North End, she went on to raise her own family in Garden City. Her home on Grandcrest Street was her pride & joy.
Helen attended Isaac Newton High School, and then held a variety of jobs most notably as the warm & popular receptionist at Paulin Chambers where she worked until the untimely plant closure in 1991.
Early retirement offered her the opportunity to spend more time with family. Be it attending son Bill's tennis matches, embarking on journeys to Toronto or Vancouver to visit with daughter Margaret, or hosting Sunday dinners for Marilyn's family. The kitchen was her favorite room in the house, where she would cook our favorites, or else try new recipes, always eager to please. And the more we ate, the happier she would be.
Affectionately known as "Granny" by most family members, Helen adored her grandchildren! They have been reminiscing about weekends spent at her home, indulging in games of "store" and "hangman", and concluding the day with readings of Eric's & Lisa's favorite chilling stories The Golden Arm and The Thing at the Foot of the Bed.
In conclusion, Helen was caring, generous, dependable, and sometimes a little feisty. Never to be forgotten by those she leaves behind.
Funeral Mass to take place on Friday, February 16, 2024 at 10:00 am at Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, 965 Boyd Avenue. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery, 4535 Main Street.
